FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
DAY 8
Author Suzanne Collins uses figurative language in her novel The Hunger Games. Figurative
language is writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally. These “figures of speech”
include similes, metaphors, personification, and hyperbole. They add interest and color and make
the language more exciting and interesting.
simile: A comparison of two things (that
may or not be alike) using the words like
or as. She is as quick as a fox.
metaphor: A comparison of two unlike
things without using like or as. The sun
was a furnace.
personification: A type of metaphor in
which non-human things or ideas
possess human qualities or actions. The
wind whistled throughout the night.
hyperbole: An obvious and deliberate
exaggeration (to emphasize something or
for humorous purposes). I ate a million
pieces of cake today.
Read the examples of figurative language from chapters 1-4 below. For each one:
• Identify whether it is an example of:
A. simile B. metaphor C. personification D. hyperbole
• Underline the words that identify it as such. (For simile and metaphor, underline the two things
being compared. For personification, underline the non-human thing and its human quality or
action. For hyperbole, underline the word or words which identify the exaggeration.)
Example:
_____ (p. 3) “Primʼs face is as fresh as a raindrop, as lovely as the primrose for which she was
named.” A - simile; there are two similes: Primʼs face as fresh as a raindrop
and Primʼs face as lovely as primrose.
______ 1. (p. 5) “...I always take a moment to listen carefully for the hum that means the fence "
is live. Right now, it’s silent as a stone.”
______ 2. (p. 6) “So I learned to hold my tongue...” (this quote continued in #3)
______ 3. (p. 6) “...and turn my features into an indifferent mask so that no one
could ever " read my thoughts.”
______ 4. (p. 6) “A thicket of berry bushes protects it from unwanted eyes.”
______ 5. (p. 16) “Attendance is mandatory unless you are on deathʼs door.”
______ 6. (p. 16) “The camera crews, perched like buzzards on rooftops, only add
to the " effect.”
______ 7. (p. 18) “He tells the history of Panem, the country that rose up out of the
ashes of a " place that was once called North America.”
THE HUNGER GAMES SURVIVAL GUIDE
The Hunger Games Survival Guide 15
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
DAY 8
Continued...
______ 8. (p. 18) “He lists the disasters, the droughts, the storms, the fires, the
encroaching " seas that "swallowed up so much of the land....”
______ 9. (p. 19) “...right now District 12 is the laughingstock of Panem, and he
knows it.”
______ 10. (p. 21) “Thatʼs how I feel now...totally stunned as the name bounces
around the " inside of my skull.”
______ 11. (p. 27) “The community home would crush her like a bug.”
______ 12. (p. 27) “But the money ran out and we were slowly starving to death.”
Digging Deeper: Finding Meaning in Similes & Metaphors
Identify the simile or metaphor in each of these examples by underlining it. Then write its
meaning. Remember that figurative language is not meant to be taken literally.
Example: (p. 37) “We always wait to trade with him when his witch of a wife isnʼt around
"
because heʼs so much nicer.”
The baker’s wife is not actually a witch, but she is not very nice.
13. (p. 44) “ʻAt least you two have decent manners,ʼ says Effie as weʼre finishing the main
course. ʻThe pair last year ate everything with their hands like a couple of savages.ʼ”
____________________________________________________________________________
14. (p. 46) “You know your mentor is your lifeline to the world in these Games.”
____________________________________________________________________________
15. (p. 51) “The woods became our savior, and each day I went a bit farther into its arms.”
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
16. (p. 52) “...I was washing up in a pond when I noticed the plants growing around me. Tall with
leaves like arrowheads.”

PART I DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. The story is set in the future, so when Katniss references her ancestors, she is referring to us.
What has happened to North America? How might we have contributed to the destruction of it?
2. Gale makes the comment that the Capitol wants the districts to be divided, that it is to their
advantage. What does he mean by this?
3. Katniss lives in the “Seam” of district 12. Why do you think it is named the “Seam”? What is a
seam and how might it apply to her neighborhood?
4. Would you volunteer for your little sister (or brother, or older sibling, or friend)? Why or why not?
What does it tell you about Katniss?
5. Why couldn’t Katniss’s mother take care of Katniss or her sister Prim? If they lived somewhere
other than the Seam, would things have been different for her mother?
6. How do you feel about the victors of the Hunger Games earning free food for their fellow citizens?
What problems might arise?
7. Why doesn’t Katniss want to get close to any of the tributes, including Peeta?
8. Why is it ironic that Effie calls district 12 barbaric?
9. Do you think it is merely coincidence that the red-headed Avox girl is serving the district 12
tributes, the nearest district from where she was captured? Could it be possible that the Capitol
knows Katniss was in the woods that day? Why or why not?
10.
Describe Caesar Flickerman. Does he remind you of any current TV personalities or talk
show hosts?
11.
What do you think Peeta’s motivation is with his announcement at the end of part 1?

PART II REVIEW
DAYS 16-18
Each student will write 3 test questions from the chapter they are assigned. The questions must be
The Hunger Games Survival Guide 29
either: True/False, Multiple Choice, or Fill-in-the-Blank, or a mixture of those. Follow the
instructions for writing a good test question. You are graded on how well it is written & the level
of difficulty!!
HOW TO WRITE A GOOD TEST QUESTION:
1. True/False statements
True/False are not really questions, but statements. Which means it should be written as a fact &
the test taker must decided if it is, indeed, a fact.
Examples: • Katniss represents District 10.
• Portia designed a dress for Katniss for the Opening Ceremonies.
• Primrose is Katniss’s younger sister.
The false statements may have one thing that is false (the first example has one thing), or many
things that are false (the second example has at least three things that are false). The fewer things
that are false in the statement, the harder it is.
AVOID opinionated statements! Students cannot answer true or false to someone’s opinion!
Bad Examples:
• Katniss has the best chance of all the tributes to win.
• Living in District 12 is better than any of the other districts.
2. Multiple Choice questions/statements
Multiple choice questions will ask a question, then give the student choices for the answer.
However, some may be more like a fill in the blank with choices for the blank, while others have the
student finish the statement.
Examples:
• In which neighborhood does Peeta live?
A. In the Seam
B. In the Hob
C. In Town with the Merchants
D. In Victor’s Village
• _______ is the name of Prim’s cat.
A. Sugarlump
B. Buttercup
C. Lady
D. Greasy Sae
• The mockingjay is a symbol of _________, but also reminds Katniss of ____.
A. rebellion; her father’s singing.
B. rebellion; Prim’s singing.
C. friendship; Peeta saving her life.
D. friendship; her mother’s singing
3. Fill-in-the Blank
Fill-in-the-Blank statements are true statements with a word or words missing in which the student
must fill in.
Example: • Katniss lives in the country of ____________.
Make sure the part you leave out cannot be substituted with anything else--there should be no
question as to what the answer is.
Bad Example: • Katniss lives in ______________. (Obviously, a few things could work here.)

THE HUNGER GAMES DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
PART III QUESTIONS
D AYS 25-28
1. Katniss’s first reaction when she hears the news about the rule change is to call
out Peeta’s name, despite the dangers of alerting the tributes to her presence. Our first reactions are
usually are truest; so how does Katniss really feel about Peeta? Is it true that she thinks she must seek
him out because no one in district 12 would forgive her. Or is there more to it?
2. Why is Katniss willing to go to the feast to get the medicine for Peeta?
3. In order to go to the feast, Katniss must drug Peeta. Of course, we know it’s never a good idea to
drug your friends. Is this an exception? Does it make that act morally acceptable? Why or why not.
4. Further discuss the moral dilemma Katniss faces with saving Peeta’s life with the phrase: “The end
justifies the means.” She reasons that the means to get the medicine (knocking Peeta out) justifies the
end result (saving his life). How do we use this reasoning in real life? Do lawmakers/politicians make
decisions based on this? How? (Give examples.)
5. Discuss the issue of “paybacks.” List examples of characters who feel as though they owed another
character something.
6. Why do you think some characters (like Katniss and Thresh) feel as though they “owe” someone for
kindness, and others (like Peeta) never expect “payment” for their kindness shown.
7. What psychological impact could the wolf mutts have on a tribute? Why? Is this worse than the
physical threat? Explain.
8. Why does Katniss wait so long to kill Cato? How does she feel when she finally does?
9. Right before the rule change is announced Katniss is looking around for a stick for Peeta’s tourniquet
and finds her arrow instead (page 342). We know why Katniss picks up the arrow, but the audience
does not hear her thought process. From their viewpoint, what might it look like instead?
10. Katniss’s first reaction to the second rule change (which revokes the first rule change) is to shoot
Peeta when she sees his hand grabbing the knife. When she realizes that he does not intend to defend
himself or kill her, she feels ashamed of her gut reaction to kill him. Do you think she could really kill
him, as she almost did? Why or why not?
11. How we behave when we are placed into uncomfortable or terrible situations says a lot about our
character. Which tributes showed humanity toward others, showed they had good character, in the
arena? Which tributes gave in to cruelty and went along with the inhumanity of the Games? How did
they show their true colors?
12, When the victors greet their mentor, escort, and stylist, why do they wear the same outfit they wore
when they entered the arena? How might this be perceived by the Capitol audience?

DESIGN YOUR OWN C APITOL M UTATION
DAYS 25-28
Over the course of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, we encounter a few of the Capitols
mutations or "mutts." These creatures are genetically designed by the Capitol to serve specific
functions.
EXAMPLES
The jabberjay is used for surveillance. It is a bird that can remember human conversations and
repeat them later. The Capitol used them to spy on the rebellious Districts. Later, after mating with
common mockingbirds, the jabberjay became the mockingjay. While it can no longer reproduce
human words, it can remember and repeat human melodies and sounds.
Tracker jackers are mutated wasps, designed to be especially deadly and persistent. When
disturbed, they will chase their victims for great distances, refusing to give up until they have had
their revenge. Their venom is a powerful psychedelic narcotic, and a few stings can kill an adult
human.
ASSIGNMENT
Your assignment is to design a new Capitol mutt. Your creature should be a combination of existing
animals, but can have added, genetically-designed features. It should serve a specific purpose for
the Capitol.
STEPS
1.
Determine what kind of creature you will design. What does it look like? What is its purpose?
How does it serve the Capitol? How do the people living in the Districts deal with or avoid it?
2.
Draw and label your new mutt. Labels should identify the creature's special features.
3.
Write a paragraph explaining your mutation. Your paragraph must cover the following: • Genetic building-blocks (which animals were combined).
• Purpose (what the Capitol uses it for).
• Coping techniques (how do the people living in the Districts deal with or avoid these
creatures?).
