UNIVERSITY OF RUHUNA FACULTY OF ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING SHORT COURSE ON COMPUTER AIDED PROJECT PLANNING BACKGROUND Computer aided project planning is alien to many of the practicing engineers irrespective of the availability of related software. Also preparing of schedules is done at head office and site level engineers do not have chance to expose for that phase. This short course is therefore designed to provide a wide knowledge about planning phase with a view to provide the best understanding of computer based project planning for practicing engineers from the government and private sector organizations within the southern region (particularly from Galle and Matara Districts). At the end of the course, participants are required to prepare a plan for a selected project. OBJECTIVES • • • • • • To provide basic theoretical knowledge of project planning To introduce project planning software for planning scheduling and controlling in construction Management To create an awareness of the constraints and difficulties in planning process To familiarize with the Microsoft Project software To provide knowledge of optimizing resource and sharing resources To provide knowledge of project planning using earned value management EXPECTED OUTCOMES At the end of the course, the participants would be well aware of preparing project plans and schedules in attractive manner while knowing how to handle available resources for the completion of the project. COURSE CONTENTS Day 1: • • • • • Day 2: • • • Introduction of Microsoft Project software Activity entering, grouping, and Work Breakdown Structure Setting calendars and entering Durations for activities establishing various activity relationships Resource allocation, leveling and smoothing Sharing resources for multiple projects Generating critical paths Entering and viewing financial information of projects. Earned value analysis TARGET GROUP Maximum number of 20 participants will be enrolled for this short course consisting engineers with B.Sc Engineering Degree DURATION The short course is organized to be conducted for two consecutive Sundays (03rd and 10th) in March, 2013 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna premises, Galle. The time duration will be from 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM. Hands-on training sessions for individuals (each individual is provided with a computer) with expert assistance will be conducted in the Computer Center of Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna. CERTIFICATE Candidates will be awarded with University approved certificate upon successful completion of the programme.
