Media Literacy Project Students will have the opportunity to re-create a scene of The Tempest, in order to deepen their understanding of the text and explore different media forms. In groups of four, students will choose one of the following media forms to present their re-enactment: 1. Video – Students will act out the scene and record it using a video camera. Students will then edit the video using programs such as iMovie or Camtasia. Students are encouraged to design this project as if they were putting on a play for an audience. 2. Comic Strip – Students will create a comic strip using Comic Life or Bit Strips to illustrate a scene in the play. All characters in the scene should be included and distinguished from one another. 3. Stop-Motion – Students will create a film using stop motion techniques. A program such as Monkey Jam can be used to do this. Students will re-create Act I Scene II from The Tempest. A link to the Scene is posted on the class Online Learning Module under the tab “Media Literacy”. This scene provides important background on the main character Prospero and how he has come to be on the island. On the stage this back story would not be ‘acted’ out, but would be all dialogue. However, students are free to re-create this scene in whatever way they feel is most effective. This assignment will give students the opportunity to explore this important information, and portray it in a creative way. The instructions for this assignment are general in order to give students choice and freedom to recreate their scenes in different ways. However, please keep the following guidelines in mind when creating the project: - - Treat this project as a production of a play. What stage techniques, costume designs, narrative strategies ect, could be incorporated into your product to maximize its impact on the audience? All members of the group must be equally involved in the creation of the project. High levels of creativity will earn more points. Take the time to explore and experiment with your media form of choice. These programs are user-friendly, and have many tools that can enhance the product. Ask questions! Be sure to collaborate with group members to create this project. Each student has different strengths that can benefit the group. The teacher also has many resources to help you during the process. Read and re-read the text. Your project will only be effective if your group completely understands the scene and its significance. We will be discussing this scene in class, but be sure to ask for clarifications if any difficulties arise. Students will also be required to submit a group proposal to the teacher prior to starting their project. The proposal will be used to organize and guide students in their thinking, and will serve as an opportunity for feedback from the teacher. The proposal template can be found on the Online Module under “Media Literacy”. After submitting the project under the “Media Literacy” tab, students will participate in a discussion forum to comment on one other group’s product, providing one piece of positive feedback and one piece of constructive feedback (70-100 words). Finally, students will write a brief reflection on their experience creating this project. Students will complete this aspect of the assignment in class, however the template is also included in the online module. Summary of requirements for this assignment: 1. 2. 3. 4.
