Secure and disseminate learning materials on the application of standards in the design and development aspects of educational programs. Secure and provide short courses about standards needed in the design and development phases of professional practice. Actively promote the integration of standards into academic programs. Standards Education Community Students • Undergraduate and graduate Technology professionals • Engineers and technologists • Experienced professionals • Standards developers • Product developers • Standards managers Business leaders Marketing professionals Importance of Standards Education Standards education recognizes the key role standards play within the engineering, technology and computing fields. Knowledge of standards can help facilitate the transition from classroom to professional practice by aligning educational concepts with real-world applications. - Facilitate Communication - Uniformity for Professional Tasks - Foundation/Framework for Innovation - Product Quality and Interoperability IEEE Standards Education Program Highlights IEEE Standards Education Web Portal IEEE Standards Education Grants IEEE Standards Education e-Magazine (eZine) Developing products/services for university students and professors and continuing education for practitioners Incorporating Standards into Engineering Curriculum Exposes students to how an industry segment operates in certain technologies. • Students acquire skills necessary to enter workforce Benefits students and faculty mentors as they face challenging design processes. • Common grounds for discussion Prepares students for applied research. • Avoids wasting time on inventing/re-building “reusable” technology Provides tools for use in learning about standards and their impact on design and development • Going beyond theory http://standardseducation.org http://standardseducation.org Standards Education: Tutorials and Case Studies Tutorials Free online comprehensive learning modules Guidance on how to assemble and apply standards appropriate to the development of a product or process Topics include: The Role of Standards in Engineering and Technology The Role of Standards in Cellular Telephony The Role of Standards in Electrical Power Systems System Verilog: IEEE Std 1800TM Case Studies Examples of the applications of standards in the real world Topics include: Wireless Routers Multimode Mobile Phones http://standardseducation.org/ Snapshot of Tutorial http://www.ieee.org/web/education/standards/tutorials.html Example of a Popular Workshop Topic Demystifying 802 Standards A full day of immersion into the world of IEEE 802® Standards that covers each of the working groups developing standards in both the wired and wireless areas IEEE Standards Education Grants Grants for Student Application Papers Applying Industry Standards To support undergraduate and graduate design projects, or development/research projects, in which industry technical standards are applied to complete the project. Students receive US $500 Faculty mentors receive US $300 honorariums. Proposal and final report must illustrate how specific standards were applied to a task in the project. Final papers describe how standards impacted the design process. Approved final papers are posted as Student Application Papers.
