Research paper: The paper must be thesis-based argument of no less than 2000 words,
written in accordance with MLA standards. Sources must be documented in a Work
Cited page. All steps must be completed if any of the steps are to count: 1) thesis
statement, 2) library workshop, 3) annotated bibliography 4), outline, 5) first draft and 6)
second draft.
Research Prompt: You must choose an outside text or texts—movie, novel, non-fiction
text, TV episode or series, video game—have it approved by the instructor, and formulate
a specific critical argument analyzing the text, using criteria from the essays we’ve read
in class so far, or from those we will read, or from an essay that you’ve discovered
yourself and that the instructor has approved of. Areas of interest will include:





The shift from folklore to corporate mass entertainment.
The evolution of the zombie or vampire genre over time.
The possible cultural consequences of violence portrayed in these genres.
The implications and uses of this trope in modern society.

Zombie films are highly known for its nature in violence, which can be seen in the heavy
usage of firearms throughout the entire film.

Various weapons are used in zombie movies, but I don’t believe they encourage us to go
out and purchase a gun.

To say that guns are being advertised is the same as saying knives and shovels and other
objects are being advertised as well because they are used in movies in a negative way
too. Shovels are sown burying people. Does this mean we can not show shovels without
being accused of “advertising violence and weapons”? Also, many scenes have knives
whether in the kitchen or not but this does not mean that knives apposes any more of a
threat than we already know they do.
