Year 10 Mid-Year Examinations Revision Booklet Exam Week: 8th – 12th February 2016 “It’s not that I’m so smart, I just stay with problems longer” Albert Einstein How to use this booklet This year, we have split the revision materials available in two. This booklet contains information from every subject who are holding examinations which will tell you about the examination and what you need to revise. A number of subjects in Year 10 have already held external exams this year so will not be running internal exams. Also, there are lots of revision materials on the school website which have been specially designed by your teachers to help you revise for these examinations. You can find them at www.hollylodge.liverpool.sch.uk under the tab for “Parent”. Once on the right page for your year you just click on the resource – you will then be given the chance to save it. Art Practice (makes perfect): • Practice copying cartoons from magazines, leaflets, etc • Practice drawing objects or views using line and tone as well as a range of materials. Visit (for inspiration): • Local galleries • Craft fairs • Look up, look down and look around to appreciate the different art and design in the local and wider community e.g. graffiti, advertising, public art Read: • Newspapers e.g. exhibition reviews • Magazines e.g. for trends • Websites e.g. Tate, Art in Liverpool, etc Use: • Design Apps • Take photographs in order to test lighting and composition Collect: • Resources - see the creative potential in the things that you throw away e.g. wrapping paper, magazines, etc Catering Everything you need to know about preparing your Catering exam can be found in the revision booklet on the school website. Computing The revision links for computing are all on the school website. Revision is also on Show My Homework as well. English Language You will answer the writing section of English Language Paper 1: Narrative/Descriptive Writing You will have 45 minutes to plan, write and proof-read your response. You will be able to choose from two questions: one will provide you with an image and the other will give you a written prompt. Both will ask you to use either narrative or descriptive language. You only need to answer one. Your response will be marked out of 40: 24 marks for content and organisation,16 marks for technical accuracy (spelling, punctuation, grammar, ambitious vocabulary, variety of sentence forms). Full details are on the school website. English Literature You will answer the Shakespeare section of English Literature Paper 1 You will have 45 minutes to plan, write and proof-read your response. You will be provided with a short extract from ‘Macbeth’ with a question such as: How does Shakespeare present Macbeth in this extract and in the play as a whole? How does Shakespeare explore the theme of ambition in this extract and in the play as a whole? This is a closed book exam which means you will not have a copy of the text with you. You should ensure that you refer closely to the extract printed in the exam paper but you should also make textual references to other parts of the play. Whilst you are not expected to quote the text exactly from memory, you must revise key quotations from across the play and ensure that you have a good understanding of the play as a whole. Full details are on the school website. French You will complete two past GCSE papers during Exam week: a Listening paper and a Reading paper. This will give you the opportunity to show what you know about the following topics: Foundation papers celebrations school life environment local area jobs relationships holiday activities health shopping Higher papers celebrations social issues school life voluntary work health & well-being media & technology holidays environment gap year You will find a revision list on the school website. You should make use of the Foundation revision list if you are in Sets 10.3 & 10.4 You should make use of the Foundation & Higher revision lists if you are in Sets 10.1 & 10.2 Geography Students should print out and work through the revision booklet, below is a checklist of what is included. Students should be able to: Define Constructive waves, Destructive waves, Erosion, Abrasion, Attrition, Solution, Hydraulic action, Long shore drift and Deposition. Explain the formation of Wave cut platforms, Caves, arches and stacks, Beaches and spits and Tombolos, Slumping on soft coastlines. Give examples of soft engineering solutions to tackle erosion Beach nourishment, Beach reprofiling, Managed retreat Give examples of hard engineering solutions to tackle erosion Sea walls, Gabions, Groynes, Rip rap, Off shore breakwaters/reefs Be able to remember in detail the 5 case studies Ventnor, Isle of Wight Pevensey Bay, Sussex Wallasea Wetlands, Essex SMMA, St Lucia The Blue plan, The Mediterranean Other revision Students will have all they need in their exercise books and should use these to complete the revision booklet. The topics are: Peacemaking 1918–1919 and the League of Nations Hitler’s foreign policy and the origins of the Second World War The Origins of the Cold War: 1945–1960 Your exam will take 55 minutes, you are encouraged to read all questions carefully. Use the number of marks a question is worth as a guide to how much to write. Maths Please see the flyer from the Maths department. Media Studies You will need to complete two tasks in the 1 hour exam. Task 1 requires you to show your knowledge and understanding of quiz shows whilst Task 2 is about designing your own quiz show. You will find: Topic on a page resources GCSE PE revision booklet AQA past paper AQA mark scheme Topic on a page resources: This colourful resource covers the whole course’s content in a concise and informative way. GCSE PE revision booklet: At the front of the booklet are some exam tips to help you. The booklet has both course content and exam style questions at the bottom of each page. Answers are at the back of the booklet. AQA past paper: This is a GCSE PE exam paper from 2014. This should give you a good understanding about what to expect in your exam. It can also be printed, then filled in with your answers in exam conditions. Perhaps you could print 2, so that you can revise and try to improve o0n your first attempt. AQA mark scheme: Use this to mark your work and assess what your strengths and areas for further revision are. GCSE Product Design Everything you need to know about preparing your Product Design exam can be found in the revision booklet on the school website. RE Use the PowerPoint and devise possible a)-d) questions using the Format of Questions slide. Use Solo taxonomy techniques to make links and create posters/diagrams. This could be as a way to answer your own devised questions, or, as an overview of the whole topic. The links to the Solo website is on Edmodo, as well as templates to complete then print out. You can also print out blank hexagons and write key terms in pen. Alternatively, Mrs Lee can supply you with a few hexagons to begin with. Select the appropriate sections (these will be 1-3) and attempt some past questions from the past papers. Key word forms/quizzes are being added to the Edmodo account.
