Prime Ministerial Candidate of BJP has called all for taking oath for Ahimsa. Let us hope that this will ensure welfare of animals. This is a first time that any would be Prime Minister has vowed for Ahimsa. Board of Trustees to send suitable appreciation letter to Shri Narendra Modi for his unique initiation for Ahimsa 3. Audited Accounts for FY 2013-14 showing deficit of about Rs. 27,000 hence need for more donations. 4. Meat Export : On a petition to Rajya Sabha filed by Jainacharya Vijay Ratnasundarsuriji, , Govt of India appointed a Rajya Sabha Committee under Chairmanship of Shri Bhagat Singh Koshiyari A detailed memorandum was submitted by ARI also. The recommendations of the Committee are quite favourable . A few important extracts are given below: “ The Committee strongly recommends that the entire Meat Export Policy be again reviewed by the Department of Commerce in a time bound manner within three months by involving all stake holders including members of the public. The Ministry of Commerce may take into consideration the findings/ observations/ recommendations of this Committee including long term implications of the meat export policy before finalising the review. The Committee recommends that pending this review no new abattoirs should be registered by APEDA. 5. Pollution from Slaughter Houses - Writ no: 309 of 2003 : ARI has been campaigning for implementation of rules and pollution including bacterial count in meat as per PFA. Not getting response from Pollution Control Board nor Animal Welfare Board of India, Department of Animal Husbandry. Hence writ filed in 2003. Interim hearings were held in which Central Pollution Control Board was fined Rs. 50,000 by Hon’ble Court. Now hearing are being held at short intervals. But unfortunately Hon’ble Justice Mr. K.S. Panicker Radhakrishnan who was quite sympathetic with the cause of Welfare of Animals and Pollution has retired. We hope that the District Committees appointed by Supreme Court will take suitable measures to close unauthorised / illegal Slaughter Houses as well as enforce implementation of rules. They have to file quarterly report. Some other parties had also filed Writ petition but all have been amalgamated with writ of Laxmi Narain Modi. He has visited slaughter houses in metropolitan cities viz Kolkata , Chennai, Mumbai (twice) Delhi (twice) and Agra. None of the slaughter houses were following all the rules related to pollution control and bacterial count which develop rapidly after slaughter . Recent orders passed by Supreme Court in the matter of Jalliakattu (Bull fight). It is hoped that government will upgrade status of animals. 6. Mid day meal : A couple of months back, a chart of diet for school children under Chacha Nehru Sehat Yojana was received and was surprised to see that they have recommended 3 months for eggs, meat and iron pills. RTI has been filed with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to advise on whose recommendation this chart has been made. So that matter can be tackled from the root cause. Copy of chart attached. 7. Promotion of Animal Rights/ Welfare : Animal Welfare Board of India proposed new Act. We met the Joint Secretary ( Ministry of Environment and Forests – Division of Animal Welfare ) concerned and discussed to have code systems for each animals / birds as prevalent in New Zealand. Without detailed code the acts would have no meaning. In the codes lot of emphasis on proper training of the workers, supervisors and managers on proper handling, feeding and general care. If the codes are not followed, the proprietor is held responsible and seriously dealt with. Let us hope that in direction of Modi government new emphasis will be given to animal rights and their welfare. Animal Welfare Board announced 5 freedoms with Freedom from hunger and thirst Freedom from heat and distress Freedom from pain, injury and diseases Freedom from discomfort and Freedom to express normal patterns of behavior AWBI was enquired to give a copy of notification, so that these freedoms have statutory obligations but no reply has been received . RTI would be filed. 8. Green/ Brown Dots : Through our sister concern, Vegetarian World, we have been campaigning for promotion of vegetarianism. Way back in 1994 Vegetarian Society of Delhi had suggestion for introduction of Green, Yellow and Red dots. However, the Government decided to have only two dots i.e. Green and Brown. Eggs were included in Brown and milk in Green resulting the two highly debatable issues. However, many Restaurants and Hotels did not implement Green and Brown dots. Whenever, such cases come to our notice, we write to the concerned establishments to introduce green and brown dots on each item of their Menu. As a result Metropolitan Japanese Hotel, Oberoi Hotel and many other restaurants and clubs have introduced their menus for their preparations with respective dots. We have been wanting to publish small brochure with relevant rules but somehow or others this has not been done, but will be done in the current year. 9. Compassion and Article 51A(g) Constitution of India : Most of the people are unaware of this article reading as under. This was introduced by 42nd Amendment on .3.1.1977 “ It shall be the duty of every citizen to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wild life, and to have compassion for all living creatures. 7 Judges of Constitution Bench of Hon’ble Supreme Court on 26.10.2005 interpreted that this article was also the responsibility of the Government. Since then, government and every citizen’s fundamental duty for compassion and protection of environment. Since the judgment ARI has been pointing to several Ministries and Departments but none of them have taken it seriously and continue to overlook. Wanton cruelties / barbarism on animals, birds are continued. How to sensitize Central and State Government is a VERY BIG QUESTION. Let us hope that as Mr. Narendra Modi has taken a vow for ahimsa, his government will be more sensitive. 10. Pollution : World Bank has estimated that India is losing Rs. 3.75 lac crores annually and this loss will further increase substantially, as pollution is increasing every second. Another report in Times of India of September 7, 2013 mentioned that country was suffering loss of US $ 6 trn due to lifestyle disease So far consideration was only for the gases which contribute to global warming but did not take into consideration PM 2.5 fine particulate matter ( 1/30 size of human hair ) . They get deposited in lungs and other parts of the body creating many health hazards including cancer, heart attacks and respiratory problems. Latest reports also attribute that air pollution degrades micro-nutrients of agricultural produce. Apart from the degradation of grain etc. due to degradation of soil. Both the problems have been taken up with Ministry of Agriculture, Planning Commission but no response 11. Animal vehicles for transport : So long animals are transported through foot or on ordinary trucks used for goods. In Western Countries, they use special vehicles meant for animals with suitable provision for their comfort. The drivers of such vehicles are specially trained to avoid jerks and cutting corners. In animal vehicles it would be difficult to overload the animals, whereas the animals are put in trucks like sardines. Many get injuries and on destination they are thrown on ground causing further internal injuries. Travel on foot need to be banned as it causes injuries are of highest order 12. Vegetarianism : A joint report published by World Cancer Research Fund, U.K., and American Cancer Research Institute, vide page 522 their first recommendation reads as under: Choose predominantly plant based diets rich in a variety of vegetables and fruits, pulses (legumes) and minimally processed starchy staple foods No.7 reads: “Meat: If eaten at all, limit intake of red meat to less than 80 grams (3 ounces) daily. It is preferable to choose fish, poultry or meat from nondomesticated animals in place of red meat”. Mark the word if at all and undomesticated animals whereas the meat available is of all domesticated animals /birds. Many scriptures divided food in 3 categories viz. Saatwik, Raajsik and Taamsik. Research has proved that human thinking and behaviour is dependent on the kind of food they take. Saatvik is for Saint and high thinkers, Raajsik food is for warriors , Taamsik food is worst which includes alcohol , meat and other unhealthy items. For general people , a mixture of Saatvik and Raajsik food is recommended for good mental faculties and body strength but Totally devoid of Taamsik food. In Jain philosophy all the living beings according to their senses as follows 5 senses 4 senses 3 senses 2 senses 1 sense - human, animals, birds, heavenly, hellish beings - flies, bees, etc. - ants, lice, etc. - worms, leaches, etc. - vegetables, plant food, grains, milk and milk products, invisible bacteria, water, fire (used for cooking) air, etc. ( We are entitled for only 1 sense food) 13. Global Meat-Out Day is observed on March 20, every year. ARI joined many years back but there has been gap due to resource crunch. International Vegetarian Union organise International Conference of 7 days and most of the participations attends full time. Mr. L. N. Modi attended two such conferences one in Europe and the other in Thailand. 99% of Thai people are non-vegetarian but it was wonderful to see that all 7 days Thai delegates attended the programme. This shows the interest of non-vegetarians as well. During the Conference only vegetarian dishes are served, which are relished by all the delegates. In India World Vegetarian Council has been a leading organisation 14. Animal Definition : Under treaty of Rome animals were defined as goods but in 1997 European Union changed the same as “sentient beings”. ARI has been campaigning for similar change in India , so that the proverbs being used should denotes life and not no life. Supreme Court adopted correct proverb but many organizations and Government departments still use proverbs representing goods. This change is necessary. Most of the people use cow and its progeny whereas Hon’ble Supreme Court used cow and her progeny. You can realise the importance of the correct use of proverbs. 15. Ahimsak Leather : Hides and skins of animals, who die naturally is Ahimsak leather but the animals who are killed and their hides and skins are Hinsak (cruel). Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has been propagating leather products of ahimsak leather. The latest is flaux leather. By look nobody can differentiate the leather and flaux leather. Many vegetarian adopt ahimsa leather or flaux leather The leather industries have been urged to use ahimsak and flaux leather to reduce slaughtering of animals 15.1Non-leather shoes in Schools: Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) , Govt. of India has issued Circular No: 21 vide letter no: CBSE/AFF/Circular/2014/678604 dated 18.2.2014 to all schools affiliated to CBSE advising them to use eco-friendly option of canvas shoes Protection of the environment needs to be practicised as much as it is preached. There is no dispute that leather comes at a huge environmental and animal welfare cost. The production of leather from animals involves highly toxic chemicals and use of which can be reduced sizably if the usage of leather shoes is not made mandatory in schools Therefore, all schools should be encouraged to consider the ecofriendly option of canvas shoes, which are more resistant to wear and tear, more comfortable and relatively inexpensive. Canvas shoes are anyway prescribed for sports purposes and can easily be used for everyday wear eliminating the need for maintaining multiple pairs. Considering the concerns and to reduce the environmental caused by school uniforms this may be considered as a tangible step forward 16. Our publications : 16.1 Fast Food Guide : Publication of 17 pages mainly extracts of an American publication on fast foods along with sliding scale which is recokner to measure , fat, sugar, salt and calories to decide what to avoid and what to take. 16.2 Appeal : It has 34 pages with photographs . All rules related to transport , slaughter houses , requirements of PFA are detailed. 16.3 Journey into Hell : At page no : 2-3 with photograph on barbarism in poultry and description of diseases related with eggs and poultry birds. 16.4 Quarterly Vegetarian Guide has been started from October 2012 which includes information on Ahimsa, Vegetarianism , Cattle , Environment and other relevant issues. We want to bring more publications but due to lack of resources the plans had to be cancelled 17. Karuna Clubs : Vegetarian Society of Delhi conducted programmes for Karuna Clubs on vegetarianism in 102 schools in Delhi. Due to sudden death of Shri D.D Seth, the Progamme Coordinator , the programme came to an end and yet could not revised. It had good effect hence in a TV interview a lady complained that school children were being advised to become vegetarian and that create problems at homes. Though during Karuna Club programmes student were advised not to create problems but humbly tell their families that for health reason we want Healthy Vegetarian Food. Karuna International of Chennai is doing pioneering work having set up more than 2500 clubs in different parts of the country. However, it is a matter of great regret that Government is promoting the culture of Taamsik food by different indigenous methods. These schemes come to our knowledge through various sources and immediately on receipt campaigns start against such programmes. 18. ARI has regular FCRA approval but have not been able to get any foreign donation. Co-operation is sought for raising funds 19. ARI is thankful to Donors and Members for their support.
