Language Arts: This week we completed our work with “Using Your Wits” in Treasures. We read a non-fiction text and a fiction text about Navajo Code Talkers from WWII. The students were looking to identify the author’s perspective while reading. Author’s perspective can be defined as, how the author feels about what they are writing about. Due to time constraints and the four day week, students were assessed differently. Instead of a written response to a comprehension question, they were given a graphic organizer to complete. For the next month of English Language Arts the students will be working with two different novels, Walk Two Moons and Bridge to Terabithia. Ms. Kuzman and I will mix the students randomly into two groups. I will start with Walk Two Moons and then move on to Bridge to Terabithia. Ms. Kuzman will start with Bridge to Terabithia and then move on to Walk Two Moons. This will allow us to ensure that we are balancing your students literacy instruction while pushing their learning. Homework will look slightly different. It will not align with Treasures and will not include grammar for the next month. Instead students will work with vocabulary, social studies and science in their packets. Writing: Students watched the video, Our Friend Martin about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After watching, students wrote an essay response to the prompt, “Name three ways our world would be different if Martin were not able to follow his dream.” It is very exciting to know that students are able to organize, write and type an essay in a couple of days with proficiency. Math: Today the students started their end of Module 3 assessment over their understating of addition and subtraction of fractions. Next up, we explore multiplication of fractions. Social Studies: Students worked with Martin Luther King this week. Science: Ms. Kuzman passed out a review packet to the students. It is due on the 27th, Students will work on this in and out of class. WINTER MAPS TESTING: January 29, 2016 8:45-10:15 am ELA Students completed their first MAPs test in Math. There was amazing growth to report. When we complete the ELA portion, I will send home a report for your review. We will go into deeper detail about scores and conferences in early March. Front Row Math and Reading: I have sent home two papers about the Computer Adaptive programs Front Row Math and Front Row English. These are programs the kiddos work with in class and can access from home. They are aligned with Common Core and the SBACC assessment. If you would like your students to receive extra support or extension, Front Row is a great resource. It is not mandatory for students to participate at home. I am just sending the sign-up information as a courtesy. Warmly, Mrs. Dart
