 Scenario: You’re home late/past curfew. When you get to your room, you find your
parents snooping through your personal items.
 Directions: Based on the scenario mentioned above, write a 5-7 sentence
response in reaction to your parents. Use AND underline two vocab words from
unit 2.
 Once you are done, begin working on Choosing the Right Word.
JOURNAL #8 (19 AUGUST 2015)
 In your vocabulary book, read the article on pgs. 22-23. Then, write a CEI
paragraph that states your argument regarding the following statement:
ALL CITIZENS SHOULD EXERCISE THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE.
Be sure to use at least one example/piece of evidence from the passage.
When you are done, begin working on Completing the Sentence (2nd period, you should
have done it for homework), and be prepared to discuss your answers to both the
journal and the vocab assignment.

 If you’ve missed any journals due to an absence or your own laziness, today is the day to
get with someone and get the journal assignment for the day you missed.
 Study your vocabulary words from units 1 AND 2. Look over your literary devices.
 1st and 3rd: Finish and turn in Of Plymouth Plantation (if you haven’t already).
 Journal Prompt: Write a paragraph about any topic you want (school appropriate), but

 Many people argue that the threat of international terrorism with its
fanatic ideology and its chief weapon, the suicide bomber, is much
different than threats faced in the past whether from witches or
communists. They contend that terrorism cannot effectively be
countered without widespread surveillance and restrictions on the
rights of the accused. They contend that protection of society requires
invasion of privacy and limits on the civil liberties of all citizens.
Make a claim about how much privacy we should be allowed or how
many of your rights are you willing to give up in order to feel confident
about your physical safety in society. Support your claim with evidence
and include an interpretation of its significance.

will not have a journal today. Instead, get out your vocabulary book and be
prepared to go over unit 3.

1) Simple sentence using the word erudite
2) Complex sentence using the word propensity.
3) Compound sentence using the word archetype
4) Compound-Complex sentence using the word amorphous
Then, in your vocabulary book, do Completing the Sentence. You have 20 minutes
to complete BOTH assignments. Completing the Sentence WILL be for a grade
today, so get working!

quotes on pg. 568. Then, in your composition book, answer the following
questions:
1) Which of the 10 quotes do you find most amusing? Why?
2) Which of the quotes contain uncomfortable truths?
3) Which are more relevant to present day?
Then, read the biographical info about Mark Twain on pgs. 566-567. You will need
this info later on during today’s class.
