We’ll learn together, and we’ll be blessed together. Thank you. LUKE 5:1-11, NLT 1 One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in around Him to listen to the Word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. He sat down in the boat and taught the crowds from there. 4 When He had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” 5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. 8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me – I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you will be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus. DISCUSSION IDEAS: • many people were attracted to Jesus to listen to the Word of God. Why do you think they were drawn to Him? 2. Jesus didn’t need to be in a pulpit or classroom to teach. This reminds us we too can teach anywhere. What are some places you hadn’t thought of where you might teach? 3. In this story Jesus called fishermen to go out where it was deeper and to let down their nets. What may this suggest about His call to each of us? To go deeper may mean: ▪ To try new techniques ▪ To act in faith, believing ▪ To study His Word more ▪ To experiment with new methods of ministries and evangelism 4. What can we learn from Simon’s part in this story? Even though he had worked all night without a catch, because God told him to do something, he did it. He believed God’s Word. 5. Think about the results of belief and obedience. Nets were so filled with fish that they began to tear. 6. Seeing the tremendous catch, how did Simon react? When he received miracles, blessings of fish, he shouted and shared with others. Not just one but both boats were filled. 7. When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees and said, “I am too great a sinner to be around you.” Or he may be implying, “Oh, Lord, I am not worthy to be your worker.” 8. Peter was the one commanded by Jesus to act, and it produced great results. However, instead of becoming proud, Peter humbled himself. 9. Jesus is always reassuring His followers and workers by saying, “Don’t be afraid.” “Don’t be afraid. From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 10. They returned to shore with 2 boats full of fish, probably their biggest catch ever! They’d be rich! And what did they do? As soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus. Simon Peter was awestruck at this miracle, and his first response was to realize his own insignificance in comparison to this man’s greatness. Peter knew Jesus had healed the sick and driven out demons, but he was amazed that Jesus cared about his day-to-day routine and understood his needs. What a wonderful reminder! God is interested not only in saving us but also in helping us in our daily activities. God has two requirements for coming to Him. Like Peter, we must recognize our own sinfulness. Then, like these fishermen, we must realize that we can’t save ourselves and that we need help. If we know that Jesus is the only one who can help us, we will be ready to leave everything and follow Him. A bit of study shows that this was the disciples’ second call. After the first call (Matt.4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20), Peter, Andrew, James and John had gone back to fishing. They continued to watch Jesus, however, as he established His authority in their lives. He met them on their level and helped them in their work. From this point on, they left their nets and remained with Jesus. For us, following Jesus means more than just acknowledging Him as Savior. We must leave our past behind and commit our future to Him. May we trust in Jesus as the disciples did! Amen. We love you, Lord! We want to enjoy working with You today!
