The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls Assessment Plan 2012-2013 The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls School Assessment Plan 2012-2013 1 The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls Assessment Plan 2012-2013 Introduction The purpose of this plan is to provide information to pupils, parents and teachers on the type of internal assessments that are being set during the course of the year. We aim to bring clarity to an area which is diverse and complicated. During the course of a year, each student will undergo a variety of different assessments and their arbitrary nature can be bewildering. By having a common language for assessment and a school plan, we aim to bring greater understanding to the situation. Another aim is to ensure that the outcomes of assessments are as valid and reliable as possible. To achieve this, the assessment criteria should be shared with the students before the assessment and then the outcomes moderated within each department. Forms of Assessment: Formative assessment is concerned with the use made of the outcomes of assessment to inform the next steps in a pupil’s learning. This could be for an individual, a group or a whole class of pupils. It is used to inform teaching and learning. Formative assessment is frequently an on-going part of teaching and learning in the classroom. As an example a teacher may observe that a child is consistently making the same mistake in the addition of decimals. She would stop the child, ask the child to explain what she is doing, clarify for the child why this is not correct, reinforce the correct method and watch her complete the next example. Such assessment can be the most powerful as it is about any aspect of her learning: homework, a test, a model, a dance. In this school targets are set with pupils and there are discussions in relation to progress towards them. When teachers mark and write comments on pupils’ work they are engaging in formative assessment. Diagnostic assessment is concerned to identify particular strengths, weaknesses and learning difficulties with a view to providing appropriate support and challenge. In a test teachers could identify which questions assess which aspect of learning and use test results to identify areas where pupils have exceptional abilities and offer extension activities to challenge them further. 2 The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls Assessment Plan 2012-2013 Evaluative assessment is used to provide evidence of the effectiveness of the curriculum and teaching. When teachers mark books they are able to see what pupils have learned and can make informed judgements about whether the curriculum activities, the teaching methods and the learning activities which they employed were appropriate. Heads of department and subject leaders can make judgements about the teaching of the subject areas for which they are responsible. If the Key Stage results in mathematics in a school are significantly worse than the national figures, while the science figures are similar to national figures, both middle and senior managers may wish to probe deeper to look for causes. Performance tables of examination results are used as a measure of the effectiveness of schools. Summative assessment provides a summary of the current attainments and achievements. Essentially it provides a snapshot. GCSE is a summative assessment, as are BTEC and AS/A2. Summative assessments are rarely used for formative purposes. Summative assessments are frequently intended for someone other than the pupil - the parent, an admissions tutor or an employer. They are frequently out of date by the time they get into the hands of the intended audience. Types of assessment: Assessment – a task set by the teacher which has to be completed either in the lesson or at home. Controlled assessment - a task set by the examination board which has to be completed in class under the supervision of a teacher within a set time. Examination - a longer question paper set either internally or externally undertaken in formal conditions with an invigilator. Test – a short question paper set internally and undertaken usually in class in formal conditions. Practical - a practical activity undertaken in formal conditions. Homework – a task set by the teacher and to be completed at home without any supervision. Internal – set by the school. External – set by an examination board. 3 The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls Assessment Plan 2012-2013 Subject Assessment Plans 2012-13 Subjects are mainly in alphabetical order.
