Portfolio Project – “The Outsiders”, Mrs. Chambliss’s Class 2015-2016
You will need:
Three prong folder (NOT A BINDER) with your name and class period on the front cover
Loose leaf notebook paper
White poster board for movie poster/ Wanted poster (see # 6). I will give further instructions in class also.

4. Complete 2 sides of a T Chart from our Essential Question “To What Extent Do Our Circumstances Determine
Who We Become?” This argument is based on your opinion and perspective of the (this serves as a partial rough
draft of #5).
5. You will choose at least 3 of the items from above that we have studied and write a 1 page Argument answering
our Essential Question. You will use the three articles of your choosing as your sources to back up your
argument.
6. You will choose 2 options from the back side of this page of your novel packet. If you will design a scene from
the movie or a new cover for the book, you CANNOT use an already published poster or book cover. * See back
of this page
This will be due to be turned in Wednesday, October 7th, 2014 (write this down in your agenda!). Every day late will
result in a deduction of 25 points. This will be counted as 2 classwork grades, 1 homework grade and 1 test grade!
*All typed work must use a 12 point font, Times New Roman or Arial, and double-spaced!
Wanted Poster
You will make a “Wanted” poster for either Dally, Johnny, or Ponyboy. It should include:
1. Character name, picture, and physical description
2. Crimes they committed (minimum of three)
3. Short paragraph containing quote(s) from the novel that provide evidence for their crime
4. Known hang-outs, nicknames, and personality traits
5. reward for turning this character in
Re-write the ending
Not happy with the way it all ended? In this option, you will write a different ending to the
story (one that does not end with space aliens or zombies, please). This ending should be at
least 2 typed pages)
Re-write 1 scene from a soc’s point of view
What would the rumble be like from the Socs’ perspective? What about the first scene? The
time by the fountain? Bob’s funeral? Pick a scene and imagine one of your own! You will need a
rough draft and typed final copy.
2 Poems based on lessons Ponyboy learned
Poetry is important to Johnny and Ponyboy. Write at least 2 poems based on situations from the
book. Each poem should have a rough draft and a final copy that is neatly typed.
Heroic Newspaper Article
Write a newspaper story about the church fire and the heroic actions of the three characters.
It should also include who, what , when, where, and why. First you will need to type your article,
then make the newspaper page including headlines, pictures, and ”side bar” information. Be sure
to look at an actual newspaper article before you begin.
Timeline (Positive/Negative events)
Pick out 12 significant incidents in the book and make a timeline with the incidents . Each
incident should have a two-sentence explanation of why they are significant. On the timeline,
put the positive incidents towards the top and the negative incidents toward the bottom.
Explain why each incident was positive or negative.
Movie Poster Create an original movie poster based on a scene from the book. Use a
posterboard, and use color – paint, markers, colored pencils. Do not reproduce an already
published poster, this would be plagiarism, and will result in a Zero!
