This song was
written by Bob Dylan.
It was written in
1963, towards the
end of the civil rights
movement. Dylan
recalled “writing the
song as a deliberate
attempt to create an
anthem of change
for the moment”.
Odetta recorded
Oh Freedom in 1956.
This song was sang by
Joan Baez before Martin
Luther King Jr. made his
“I Have Dream” speech.
The line that was
repeated through out the
whole song was, “And
before I'd be a slave I'll
be buried in my grave
and go home to my Lord
and be free”.
A R&B song by Sam Cooke written in
1963. It talks about how eventually one day a
change will come when blacks and whites will
be able to be together, and blacks don’t have to
hide or get beaten.
SAM COOKE LYRICS - A Change Is Gonna Come
Written by Pete Seeger in the
1930’s. This song, “consists of a
series of verses wherein a single
line changes for each verse.
This folk song style is typical
probably because it makes the
song easy to remember and
even easier for a song leader to
sing with a group of people”.
Published in 1947 by Pete Seeger.
This song became popular in the Civil
Rights movement in 1959. Each verse
talks about a different way, that they
as a group will overcome all the
problems.
Pete Seeger - We shall overcome YouTube
Originally written by Billy
Taylor. But in 1967 Nina
Simone recorded the more
known version. The song
talks about how she wishes
she could be free, and do the
things she wants to like
speak out.
