Meeting called to order at 12:15.
1. Melinda Jackson introduced the agenda and asked if there were any questions or additional
items.
2. Melinda Jackson shared the WASC Steering Committee Task List for responding to WASC off-site
visit (conference call)
 Group discussion of key assessment-related items:
o Clarifying the relationship between annual assessment reports and program
action plans
o Clarifying the purpose of the annual assessment reports
o Updating status of PLO mapping to ULGs (particularly for graduate programs)
o Clarifying current efforts to institute direct assessment of PLOs
 ACTION: Melinda Jackson and Brandon White will meet in January to begin drafting
responses to these items and share with the AF group through a Google Doc
 ACTION: AF group will discuss again at January 30 meeting.
3. Assessment Facilitators reported on the status of their feedback to programs in their colleges.
Most colleges had completed feedback to all (or nearly all) of their programs. Humanities and
CASA plan to be finished by early spring semester. Student Affairs plans to have their new PLOs
and assessment plans posted on their website by early January.
 ACTION: Need to clarify SJSU policy on assessing Minors, Concentrations, and
Certificate programs, and revise Annual Assessment Form to reflect these
requirements. Brandon White will report back to AF group on Academic Senate
progress on this issue.
 FOLLOW UP: The GUP office has updated the program records page since our last
meeting, so all Annual Assessment Reports for 2013-14 should now be posted. Please
double-check the programs in your colleges and let Melinda know if any are still
missing.
4. Melinda Jackson presented a short exercise from the Assessment 101 training attended in
October. The exercise focused on Learning Outcomes, and provided examples for teams or small
groups to practice identifying and improving PLOs. MJ suggested that AFs might wish to adapt
this exercise for use in their own colleges, with department chairs, assessment coordinators,
and faculty, to encourage the ongoing development of a robust culture of assessment at SJSU.
 ACTION: MJ will post these training exercises in the Assessment Committee folder for
sharing.
 SUGGESTION: Several AF group members suggested creating webinars and/or
workshops focused on Assessment 101 topics for sharing with new faculty, department
chairs, assessment coordinators, course coordinators, and other interested campus
community members.
5. Plans for next semester:
 Continue discussion of WASC responses at January meeting
 Robin Love will present a “Best Practices” case study from the College of Education in
February
 Discuss additional ways the AF group can help to build the culture of assessment at SJSU
and support programs in their development of sustainable assessment practices.
 Begin a discussion of outcomes-based funding models that may be considered for
California in the future and how this might affect our institution.
