Assessment Facilitators Group Meeting December 19, 2014 Minutes Attending: Melinda Jackson, Jinny Rhee, Minnie Patel, Scot Guenther, Jan English-Lueck (for CoSS), Julie Sliva-Spitzer, Demerris Brooks, Carol Reade, Emily Wughalter, William Street, Brandon White, Robin Love, Diana Wu Meeting called to order at 12:15. 1. Melinda Jackson introduced the agenda and asked if there were any questions or additional items. 2. Melinda Jackson shared the WASC Steering Committee Task List for responding to WASC off-site visit (conference call) Group discussion of key assessment-related items: o Clarifying the relationship between annual assessment reports and program action plans o Clarifying the purpose of the annual assessment reports o Updating status of PLO mapping to ULGs (particularly for graduate programs) o Clarifying current efforts to institute direct assessment of PLOs ACTION: Melinda Jackson and Brandon White will meet in January to begin drafting responses to these items and share with the AF group through a Google Doc ACTION: AF group will discuss again at January 30 meeting. 3. Assessment Facilitators reported on the status of their feedback to programs in their colleges. Most colleges had completed feedback to all (or nearly all) of their programs. Humanities and CASA plan to be finished by early spring semester. Student Affairs plans to have their new PLOs and assessment plans posted on their website by early January. ACTION: Need to clarify SJSU policy on assessing Minors, Concentrations, and Certificate programs, and revise Annual Assessment Form to reflect these requirements. Brandon White will report back to AF group on Academic Senate progress on this issue. FOLLOW UP: The GUP office has updated the program records page since our last meeting, so all Annual Assessment Reports for 2013-14 should now be posted. Please double-check the programs in your colleges and let Melinda know if any are still missing. 4. Melinda Jackson presented a short exercise from the Assessment 101 training attended in October. The exercise focused on Learning Outcomes, and provided examples for teams or small groups to practice identifying and improving PLOs. MJ suggested that AFs might wish to adapt this exercise for use in their own colleges, with department chairs, assessment coordinators, and faculty, to encourage the ongoing development of a robust culture of assessment at SJSU. ACTION: MJ will post these training exercises in the Assessment Committee folder for sharing. SUGGESTION: Several AF group members suggested creating webinars and/or workshops focused on Assessment 101 topics for sharing with new faculty, department chairs, assessment coordinators, course coordinators, and other interested campus community members. 5. Plans for next semester: Continue discussion of WASC responses at January meeting Robin Love will present a “Best Practices” case study from the College of Education in February Discuss additional ways the AF group can help to build the culture of assessment at SJSU and support programs in their development of sustainable assessment practices. Begin a discussion of outcomes-based funding models that may be considered for California in the future and how this might affect our institution.
