All-City Jazz Orchestra
INSPIRING, CREATING, EDUCATING JAZZ MUSICIANS IN THE TRI-CITIES, WA.
Our Mission
The All-City Jazz Orchestra is an ensemble developed to educate and advance young jazz musicians by
performing authentic big band and combo music in the Tri-Cities, Washington. We are excited to offer
this program to students in grades 6-8 in the 2014-15 school year.
The All-City Jazz Orchestra is an organization dedicated to:


To promote jazz education via education rehearsals, clinics, and public performances,
Work with local public school music students to provide a venue for members to perform and
explore jazz music.
This will be accomplished by fostering unique learning opportunities for the study of and performance of
jazz music as an art form and to carry on any related activities designed to accomplish the following:





Support school jazz programs
Connect professional jazz musicians and students
Unite and empower the jazz community
Support live jazz performance
Increase and educate jazz audiences

Rehearsals
Rehearsals will be held every Monday evening from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Rehearsals are held in the
Carmichael Middle School Band Room, unless otherwise noted.
It is important that every member of the All-City Jazz Orchestra attend every rehearsal. Attendance will
be strictly enforced and the directors reserve the right to ask any students to cease their involvement if
they miss All-City Jazz Orchestra events.
Cost
The cost for participation in All-City Jazz Orchestra is $100, due at the first rehearsal on January 19.
Once a student has participated in classes, this fee is non-refundable.
Auditions
Auditions will be held on January 12, 2015, at Carmichael Middle School between 6:00pm and 9:00pm.

Requirements for saxophones, trombone, trumpet, piano, bass, and guitar:
Requirement 1: Play a chromatic scale from your lowest note to your highest note.
Requirement 2: Play Chorus 1 & 2 of Shufflin’ in F, which is provided.
Requirement 3: Play a piece of your choice, about 1 minute in length. This may be in a jazz or
classical style, and may include sheet music from your band class, band method book,
private lesson material, or any other piece that demonstrates your abilities.
Optional: You may improvise to a Bb blues. We can provide a Jamey Aebersold background.
Requirements for Drum Set:
Drum Set Requirement 1: Play 32 measures of swing time, showing 4 measure phrases.
Drum Set Requirement 2: Play 32 measures of a Latin beat, showing 4 measure phrases
Drum Set Requirement 3: Play the provided excerpt from In A Mellow Tone.
Optional Drum Set: Play a drum solo in a style of your choice.
Important Requirement
Because a goal of the All-City Jazz organization is to support school music programs, it is a requirement
that any ensemble participants are also currently enrolled in the jazz ensemble at their home school.
