Pritchard HBS Period 1-2 March 9, 2015 Digestive System Small Intestine Emma Davidson, Nicole Bergman, Jordan Dubonion, Makayla Scheirer Size and Location Relative size of the Small Intestine ★ About 20 feet long, about an inch in diameter Location of Small Intestine ★ Extends from the stomach to the large intestine 3 Sections and Their Function ★ Duodenum- takes partially digested food from the stomach and is mixed with bile from the liver to complete the digestion process. ★ Jejunum- serves as the primary site for nutrition absorption. ★ Ileum- completes absorption process that was missed in the jejunum. What is the pH & how is it maintained? ★ pH within the small intestine is about 6 to 7.4 pH in the terminal ileum. It is maintained by helping the small intestine through the digestion process. Where do bile and pancreatic enzymes enter the small intestine? ★ Bile and pancreatic enzymes enter the small intestine through the Papillia of Vater. Enzymes in the Small Intestine ★ Peptidases: these digest the smaller pieces of broken down proteins, called peptides, into their individual amino acids. ★ Sucrase: this breaks sucrose, a disaccharide (of the carbohydrate category) into monosaccharides. ★ Maltase: this breaks maltose, a disaccharide (of the carbohydrate category) into monosaccharides. ★ Lactase: this breaks lactose, a disaccharide (of the carbohydrate category) into monosaccharides. How your food moves ★ The muscularis layer surrounds the submucosa and provides several layers of smooth muscle tissue to move the intestines Works cited Carta. (n.d.).
