What is GOING ON?
The Capulets and The Montagues are two familes that have been in
a long fight. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet.
When the play starts Romeo and Juliet do not know each other.
Juliet is arranged to marry a man named Paris.
Romeo is in love with a woman named Rosaline. Rosaline wants to
be a nun and does not love Romeo. He is lovesick and upset.
Juliet’s family, the Capulets, are having a costume party and Romeo
knows that Rosaline will be there so he sneaks in even though his
best friend, Mercutio and his cousin, Benvolio, tell him not to.
At the party Romeo sees Juliet for the first time and they fall in love
although they do not know that they are enemies. Juliet’s cousin
Tybalt, who is quick to fight, recognizes Romeo and chases him from
