The Capulets and The Montagues are two familes that have been in a long fight. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. When the play starts Romeo and Juliet do not know each other. Juliet is arranged to marry a man named Paris. Romeo is in love with a woman named Rosaline. Rosaline wants to be a nun and does not love Romeo. He is lovesick and upset. Juliet’s family, the Capulets, are having a costume party and Romeo knows that Rosaline will be there so he sneaks in even though his best friend, Mercutio and his cousin, Benvolio, tell him not to. At the party Romeo sees Juliet for the first time and they fall in love although they do not know that they are enemies. Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, who is quick to fight, recognizes Romeo and chases him from the party vowing to fight him when he sees him again. Someone has promised Paris that he will marry Juliet. He is very presumptuous about this acting as if she were already his wife. Tybalt is a Capulet. He is Juliet’s cousin. He hates Montagues. He is very aggressive, he uses bad words often and is quick to pick a fight. He is very fashionable. The Nurse Juliet’s caretaker since she was born and her best friend.
