BELLE RIVE--Everyone is worried about Bill Lathrop except Bill Lathrop. The Belle Rive Grade School
principal is retiring May 26 after 21 years with the district and a total of 34 years in education. His friends
are worried that he will get bored, but he says he'll be fine. 'I live on a farm southwest of Wayne City, and
I'll raise some cattle. That will keep me busy. Everybody tells me I ought to take up fishing, but that
doesn't interest me. A lot of people are worried that I won't have enough to do, but my wife says she has
enough things planned to keep me busy for the next 10 years,' Lathrop said. Lathrop, a gentle, modest
man, has been a little embarrassed yet pleased by the fanfare surrounding his retirement. Recently his
friends threw an open house for him at the school. He knew the event was planned, but he did not expect
the approximately 200 people who showed up, nor the surprise gift he received--a chain saw. 'They
called my wife and asked her what I wanted and she'd heard me say something about a chain saw,'
Lathrop explained. 'They had the gym decorated and a cake. It was surprising; I'm not used to all this,'
Lathrop commented. Other signs of appreciation range from huge cards to a schoolhouse, made of a
shoebox, and construction paper and decorated with pupils' photos, to fresh flowers in a soda bottle, a
recent gift from a kindergartner. He received congratulations from the generations of pupils he has
taught. One person gave him a card that thanked him for his 'words of wisdom.' "Look at that. 'Words of
wisdom.' That's pretty strong stuff," Lathrop said, sounding incredulous. Lathrop refutes the claim of
wisdom, but then contradicts himself by offering this advise for young teachers: 'Treat children like
people. You have to relate to them and talk to them; then they like you better and you get along better.'
That simple lesson is one Lathrop has learned well after being with the Opdyke-Belle Rive Grade School
district for 21 years, including seven at Belle Rive and a number of years as superintendent and then
principal at Opdyke. Lathrop began teaching in 1958 at Berry School in Wayne County, before teaching
at Oak Grove Grade School from 1959 to 1971. He came to the Opdyke-Belle Rive District in 1971.
When Lathrop began his career, he taught two grades in one classroom. 'One half would be quiet while
the other got an assignment. One grade learned what to expect in the future, and the other one got a
review of what they had learned the previous year,' he recalled. At that time Lathrop was responsible for
his pupils all day long. He had no lunchtime, recess or physical education supervisors or teacher's aide.
Special ed, remedial classes, kindergarten and preschool were unheard of. 'Education has changed a lot.
We have computers now. The first time I heard a computer that could talk to me, I was amazed.' he said.
Lathrop has learned to appreciate the use of computers to keep track of sick leaves, memos and
schedules. He also appreciates another difference from his early days--his staff. 'I have been fortunate
to have had the help and support of many good parents, teachers, support staff, superintendent and
board members. I have been especially fortunate to have had the same great secretary, Dexter Orrison,
for the last 20 years, who works and relates well with the staff, parents and students,' Lathrop said. He
and his wife the former Trixie Erkamn, have two children, Stephen, a computer systems analyst in the
state comptroller's office in Springfield; and Suellyn an assistant archivist at Missouri Botanical Gardens
in St. Louis.
BELLE RIVE PRINCIPAL RETIRING AT END OF CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR, [with photo] Bill Lathrop,
principal of Belle Rive Grade School, is retiring at the end of the current school year. Lathrop will be
completing 35 years in education in the schools of Wayne and Jefferson counties. Former and present
students, colleagues, parents and friends are invited to an open house to honor Lathrop 2 to 4 p.m.
Sunday at the school. Lathrop began his teaching career in 1958 at Berry School in Wayne County.
From 1959 to 1971 he taught at Oak Grove Grade School. In 1971 he came to Opdyke-Belle Rive
,

Now on this 5th day of August, A.D. 1940, comes the petitioner, Henry Erkman, unmarried, a resident
of Wayne County and the State of Illinois, and it appearing to the Court that on the 5th day of August,
A.D. 1940 the said petitioner filed in the office of the Clerk of this Court a petition for the adoption of Edna
May Erkman, and it satisfactorily appearing to the Court that the defendants, Harold Edward Erkman,
father of said child, Edna May Erkman; Clarence Colclasure, father of Iva Erkman, deceased mother of

And this cause coming on to be heard, and the Court having heard the evidence submitted and the

That the petitioner herein is an unmarried man, but has made arrangements with his sister, Anna
Wheeler, of Mill Shoals, Illinois, to provide a home and look after and rear said child, and he is financially
