ASSIGNMENT #6…..CASE STUDIES
DUE SEPTEMBER 2nd…..1ST DAY OF SCHOOL
ASSIGNMENT #7…… TEST CH. 1-4
SEPTEMBER 3rd ….2nd DAY OF SCHOOL 100pts
Please note that AP Psychology is an elective, college-level course with higher student
expectations than most courses taken by high school students.
Students who come into the course with a background in some of the psychological
concepts discussed during the year will have an academic advantage in the class. Prior
knowledge allows students to speak intelligently on concepts and topics and have the
potential for more success on the AP Psychology exam in the spring.
THEREFORE, you must be studying the chapters that have been assigned to you and be
prepared for a test of the major concepts upon your return to school. You will also have
many follow-up quizzes as you are not allowed to forget the terminology.
REMEMBER, the AP Psychology exam is essentially a giant vocabulary test. If you do
not know what you are talking about you will not do well. You must be studying
constantly in order to succeed in the class as well as on the exam.
These assignments have been given to you on Thursday June 4th 2015. You
have ample time to begin all work and complete all assignments for the
scheduled due dates. It is in your best interest to begin working as soon as
possible. You must also be studying continuously in this course as there are
constant tests and quizzes which begin the first week of school.
Remember this is Advanced Placement, meaning college level course for
which you could receive college credit. Therefore, the standards of the course
are held as such.
****Late work will NOT be accepted****
Psychology Research Paper
Overview: Write a short term paper on a specific topic of interest within Psychology.
This is a very open ended because I would like for you to choose a topic that you are
interested in and excited about studying. Your paper should go beyond the textbook to
explore a specific area in depth. This paper should include the research findings,
background/history/pervasiveness of the topic, and any other information that is relevant
to the topic.
Topic: See the attached page for topic suggestions. I must approve topics.
Formatting
 The paper should be a maximum of three (3) complete typed pages in the body of
the text. The three-page maximum does not include the cover page, references.
 Avoid excessive use of lists, outlines, bulleted points, figures, and tables in the
text. Use direct quotations sparingly.
 The margins should be one inch on all sides. All text should be double-spaced.
 Text should be 10 or 12 points in size, Times New Roman in a standard style
(e.g., do not use all capitals or all bold text).
 The paper must be formatted in the style of the American Psychological
Association (APA). Do not use MLA formatting. You can go to
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ for APA formatting. I
understand this will be your first time using this format, so do your best.
 The paper must have at least four sources, of which no more than one (1) can be
“at large” i.e. from a magazine. Books and research papers are better sources.
Grading: The paper is worth 100 points. The papers will be graded on the following
criteria:
Content (45 points): The paper must adequately cover the empirical research,
background/history/pervasiveness of the topic with the most up-to-date research findings
and information.
Sources (20 points): The number and quality of the sources is important. Books and
professional journal articles are better sources than most web-based information.
Good sources: Books, articles from peer-reviewed scientific journals (e.g.,
Trends in Neuroscience, The Journal of Experimental Psychology)
Fair sources: Newsweek and other news magazines, Psychology Today,
newspaper articles, web sites from reputable sources (e.g., NIMH)
Unacceptable sources: Encyclopedias, health web sites (e.g., Webmd.com), web
sites made by people without professional training in the field. WIKIPEDIA IS
NEVER A SOURCE!!!!!
Writing, grammar, and spelling (20 points)
APA format (15 points): The paper must follow APA formatting. The details of APA
style will be covered in a lecture and a handout.
Plagiarism and academic dishonesty: Plagiarism is copying the works of others, and
then presenting them as your own. This is strictly forbidden. All direct quotes must have
quotation marks and a citation. You must put information from other sources in your own
words.
To turn in: Your paper must be turned in by no later than 12pm on Friday, August 1st. If
I receive your assignment 1min late, it will not be accepted and you will receive a grade
of a 0. You have 2 months to complete this paper, therefore, I suggest you DO NOT
