• Carthage had a strong navy. Rome did not have a navy, only a strong army.
• Rome quickly assembled a naval fleet. Modeled after Carthage, but invented a moveable bridge that they could use to bored another ship and fight hand to hand battle.
• Rome finally won Sicily in 241 BC and Carthage had to pay a huge fine to Rome.

• Carthage wanted to expand into Spain.
• Spain had gold, silver, copper, lead, and iron as natural resources.
• Rome did not want Carthage so close to their empire.
• Rome encouraged Spain to revolt against Carthage.
• Carthage sent greatest general, Hannibal, to Rome.
• Hannibal’s attack in 218 BC started the Second Punic War

Spain.
• Army marched through
Gaul (present day France).
• Carthage crossed Alps to attack.

• 216 BC Hannibal defeated Romans at Battle of Cannae,
Southern Italy.
• 206 BC Roman forces, led by Scipio, captured Spain and attacked Carthage.
• Hannibal returned to Carthage to help.
• 202 BC Scipio’s people defeated Carthage in Battle of Zama.
• Carthage had to give up their navy and pay a large fine to Rome.
• Spain is now Roman territory.
• Rome is now a supreme power in the Western Mediterranean.
THIRD PUNIC WAR
• Rome still considered Carthage a military threat.
• 146 BC Rome destroyed Carthage in Third Punic War.
• Rome was also waging war in the eastern
Mediterranean at this time.
• 140s BC Greece fell completely under
Roman Rule.
• 20 years later Rome moved into Asia.
