Psychology & Personal Development Final Assessment 2008-2009
To the Student: On June 1st, 2nd and 5th , you will take your final examination in Psychology . You will select three of
the four questions below. You should review and prepare to answer all four of these questions.
1. Schizophrenia is classified by psychologists into subtypes which affect at least 1 in 100 people
worldwide.
Task
 Define schizophrenia.
 Describe two of the five subtypes of schizophrenia specifically.
 Identify at least three symptoms of schizophrenia.
 Explain both the possible causes and treatments for those with
the disorder.
2. Scenario – Imagine you have a friend who is failing several subjects, does little homework /
assignments, and fails to study for tests.
Task
 Identify two personality theories we have studied in class that could
explain your friend’s behavior.
 Define each theory and identify the person or theorist who
developed the theory.
 Use as many specific ideas and concepts from the each theory and
explain them in your response.
3. Throughout our study of the Life Span we have studied cognitive, emotional, and social development.
One of the key issues that is often examined by developmental psychologists is the concept of “nature
versus nurture.” The separation of biological and environmental causes of behavior can be very
complicated.
Task: Choose three types of development that we have studied and for each:
 Discuss how much each development is the result of inheritance
(heredity).
 Discuss how much each development is the result of what we have learned
(experience).
4. Psychologists have made important theoretical findings through experimentation and the scientific
method. Their findings have been applied to both science and social psychology.
Task: Choose any three people we have studied and for each:
 Discuss the steps of the scientific method.
 Discuss the work/experiment that the person has completed in a field of psychology.
 Evaluate the significance of the person’s work and how their theories are applicable
in their prospective field.
