Achievement Grade Matrix

Secondary Homework and Effort Grade Rubrics

To use these rubrics, identify which column best describes each student’s work. The average of the numbers of the columns will determine the number for the appropriate homework or effort grade.

Homework Grades – Completion and quality as appropriate to the ability of the student

* This applies to all class work, not necessarily just assignments given to do outside of class time

Completion

Timeliness

1

 Student completes nearly all of the work

 Work done on time nearly all of the time

2

 Student completes more than half of the work

 Work done on time more often than not

3

 Student completes less than half, but at least some, of the work

 Timeliness is inconsistent, about half is done on time

 Quality is lacking, barely acceptable

4

 Student completes no, or nearly no, work

 Work is never, or very seldom, done on time

Quality  Quality is as expected, or better, for this student

 Quality is average  Quality is unacceptable and inconsistent

Effort Grades – Behavior, participation, attendance, attentiveness, and taking responsibility are all considered

* Consideration is given to student personalities, especially with participation, but it is noted that this grade is based purely on observations by the classroom teacher

Behavior

Participation

Attendance

Attentiveness

Responsibility

1

 Student is wellbehaved at all times and responds positively to correction or

 guidance

Student actively participates appropriately on a regular basis

 Student has only missed 1 or 2 days due to illness or unavoidable circumstances

 Student is an active listener and responds well to instruction, consistently pays attention and is well-

 engaged

Student takes responsibility for doing class work, asks questions when he/she needs to understand, catches up on material missed due to absence

2

 Student is wellbehaved most of the time, but may or may not heed advice for

 guidance

Student participates occasionally, or

Student participates actively, but not always appropriately

 Student has missed 3-4

 days this grading period, or

Student has been absent many days but for serious health reasons or home assignment purposes

 Student pays attention most of the time, is mostly prepared for class but sometimes disengaged

Student sometimes takes responsibility and doesn’t often get behind in work, question-asking for comprehension is inconsistent

3

 Student is not very well-behaved but shows a willingness to try to improve and

 listen

Student participates minimally, but will respond if called on

 Student has missed 5-6 days this grading period without serious circumstances

 Student is often tired and uninvolved, sometimes works on other class work, many times not prepared

Student does not take much responsibility or show any initiative, waits for others to ask the questions

4

 Student is not wellbehaved and does not listen

Student refuses to participate, even if called on

 Student has missed more than 10% of school days this grading period without serious circumstances

 Student consistently neglects school work because they don’t seem to care, almost always comes to class

 ill-prepared

Student refuses to ask questions or seek extra help, does not respond to numerous offers from teacher for help

Ben Snyder

Director

My wife and I are now entering our fifth year at HOPAC and continue to love what we get to do at this school. We come from near Chicago, Illinois, in the United States, where I completed my bachelor's degree in Secondary Education, master's degree in Educational Leadership, and taught math for 5 years in a public high school. I have taught secondary math at

HOPAC, been the Secondary Assistant Principal for 2 years, and Secondary Principal. This is my first full year as Director of

HOPAC, and I am excited to see God moving in incredible ways. I look forward to seeing Him continue to lead us forward in the years ahead.

Karen Graham

Primary Principal

Having spent the last 6 years teaching in Kindergarten I am excited to be working as the new Primary Principal at HOPAC. I relocated to Dar es Salaam from the UK in 2007 with my husband, Shaun, and our children, Megan, Jacob, Lois, and

Benjamin. We are from a town called Northampton, in the middle of England. I graduated with a BA (Hon) in Music and

English from Brunel University and then I went on to do PGCE in Primary Education, specializing in lower primary. We are here as missionaries with Elim International UK, and run the Sala Sala kids club (Klabu ya Watato wa Sala Sala) that is currently based on the HOPAC campus several days a week. I am excited to be taking on this new role and seeing all that God has in store for HOPAC this year.

Carley Mwenda

Secondary Assistant Principal

I come from the United States, from a very small town in the state of Florida. After graduating from Southeastern University with a degree in Elementary Education, I taught English in China before joining Wycliffe Bible Translators as a missionary teacher. In 2005, I began my work at HOPAC as the kindergarten teacher. I have since taught grade 1, grades K-8 ICT, and

IGCSE ICT. I am currently the Secondary Assistant Principal, a position I enjoy very much. I live with my husband, Victor, here in Dar es Salaam.

Primary

Elayne Jana

Kindergarten

This is my third year at HOPAC, and I am excited to be serving as Kindergarten’s class teacher this year. I am from Tanzania, and was born at Aga Khan Hospital here in Dar es Salaam. I am married to Trevor Jana, and he and I are so thankful for our 9 month-old baby boy, Isaiah. I am ethnically Indian, so enjoy cooking and eating spicy food. I love to read for leisure, write, make crafts, and get to know new people. I am particularly passionate about Bible Curriculum for Children’s ministry and would someday like to publish my own material.

Danielle Lovelett

Grade 1

My name is Danielle Lovelett, I am the Grade 1 teacher. This is my second year at HOPAC. I am from the wonderful state of

Connecticut, in the USA. I love living in Tanzania, even though it can be extremely hot, and practicing my Swahili with local children. I enjoy swimming in the ocean, traveling, and playing football. I am coaching the girls U-18 football team this year.

Last year I coached the U-11 girls’ team and they grew so much in their skills and did an amazing job at their tournament in

December. I am so excited to be at HOPAC again this year and to see how my wonderful Grade 1 students will grow academically and spiritually!

Joyce Maina

Grade 1 Teaching Assistant

I come from the northern part of Tanzania. I am an assistant teacher here at HOPAC and have enjoyed the 8 months spent working with first graders. I'm so glad that I got a chance to work with kids, helping them to learn, watching their behavior, and teaching them about God, which is the most important thing! I really thank God for giving me this opportunity to work with His little angels, with the wonderful teachers and workers of HOPAC.

Irene Dzombe Ikeresho

Grade 2

I am the grade two teacher, co-teaching with Brittany Mathias. I come from the southern highlands of Iringa and have been at HOPAC for quite some time. I really enjoy teaching and the kids are very special to me. Personally, I like to have something

Teacher Bios

useful to work on, and when I am on vacation I like to get away and visit nature with my children. God blessed us with three wonderful children: two girls and one boy in the middle. I especially enjoy reading the Word of God, praying, and listening to

Gospel music.

Brittany Mathias

Grade 2

My name is Brittany Mathias, and I am from the United States. This is my first year at HOPAC, but my fourth year of teaching.

Back in the United States I taught 4th grade Literacy and Social Studies for three years, so in a sense, reading and writing are my specialty. I love to learn about other cultures and see how different people process the world around them. I also love to travel as it opens my eyes to how creative and detailed God is. The Lord touches me deeply through the beauty of His creation. Because of HOPAC’s diverse student population and evident love for the Lord, I am excited about soaking in all that the Lord has to teach me. I hope to learn more about Tanzania and the cultures of my students as the year continues on.

Laura Shirley

Grade 3

My name is Laura Shirley and I’m 26 years old. I’m from Bromsgrove, which is a large town in England. I studied at Bangor

University in Wales, where I received a 2:1 BA in English with Creative Writing, and I then my PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate of Education). I have been teaching for four years at the same school, and I only moved to Tanzania in August of this year. I love reading, writing and music – anything creative really. One of my favourite things about teaching is seeing the children using their imaginations and thinking outside of themselves. I am really looking forward to my time in HOPAC.

Yvonne Slocombe

Grade 4

I am married to Robert and have two sons and a daughter. I am delighted to be teaching the Grade 4 class again this year and look forward to a happy and exciting year ahead. I graduated from the University of the West of England with a Bachelor of

Education (hons) degree. I specialized in English Literature. I went on to teach for several years in English Primary Schools.

Later I developed an interest in Special Needs education and went on to teach at an Agricultural College. I worked with 16 and 17 year old students who had academic or emotional difficulties. In 2002 I left England and worked with war orphans in

Burundi for 6 years before relocating to Tanzania. In Tanzania I worked at the Cannon Andrea Mwaka School in Dodoma, and then moved to Dar es Salaam with Mission Aviation Fellowship (Christian Mission) and was seconded to HOPAC. This is my fourth year at HOPAC.

Steve and Jenn Wickham

Grade 5, Special Needs

My (Steve) degree is in Elementary Education from Kent State University, in the United States and I taught in Kansas City,

My wife, Jenn, works in the special needs department, our son Gavin is in grade 3 and our daughter just started Kindergarten. We enjoy volunteering our time at the Nuru center, Sala Sala kids club, Kurasini orphanage, after school activities, and Church. I have come to enjoy playing football as well as snorkeling.

In Indonesia, I was privileged to teach math and science for four years to grades 7 -12 at International Christian American School, a school for missionary kids. I joined the

HOPAC community in July 2007 and I have enjoyed being a part of this team since then. I am teaching math to grades 10, 11 and 12 this year.

Marc Driesenga

Bible

My wife, Gretchen, and I along with our three young children have recently moved to Tanzania from Grand Rapids, Michigan,

United States. We are excited to be teaching and serving in the HOPAC community and especially excited to not have a

“Michigan Winter” which usually includes several meters of snow! This school year I will be teaching Grade 7 through Grade

12 Bible classes. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Bible and Theology from Kuyper College and a Bachelor’s in English and History for Secondary Education from Cornerstone University. I previously taught at Western Michigan Christian High School where I taught English, History, PE, Bible, and coordinated the ESL program.

Sheshi Kaniki

Economics

I moved to Dar es Salaam with my wife Trudie and our three sons at the end of 2012. We moved here in response to God’s call to plant a church. I am a Tanzanian national (I lived outside Tanzania for 34 years) and my wife is from Zimbabwe. I hold a

PhD in economics from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. I have taught first, second and third year university courses in economics. I served as a pastor in our church in South Africa for about 7 years. During this period I also worked as an economist in the private sector. I am excited about helping my students fulfil the potential God has given them.

Dan Kappers

History

My wife, Sue, and I are new arrivals to the HOPAC faculty. I will teach secondary history. We come from the United States, and have three adult children and two grandchildren - our granddaughter being born 6 days before we left for Africa! I have degrees in History from Northwestern College and law from Harvard Law School. I have worked as an attorney with the US

Department of Agriculture, a Legislative Assistant for a US Senator, and then 20 years as a law enforcement officer, to include

11 years as a professional legal instructor where I discovered a passion for teaching. Upon retiring in 2006, I became a substitute school teacher. Retirement also provided the time to pursue my favorite lifelong hobby: history. I am grateful God has called me to HOPAC and am enthused with the opportunity to share both my excitement for history and my faith in

Christ with students.

Festo Kijo

Art

I am a Tanzanian art and design teacher with 27 years of teaching experience at university, secondary, and primary levels of education. I am also a contemporary practicing artist with over 30 pieces of artwork displayed at public and private places including the new Parliamentary Debating Chamber in Dodoma. I have studied Art and Design here in Tanzania as well as in

Kenya, Egypt, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, France, England, Wales, Scotland, Canada, and the United States. I love sports, traveling, and having adventures, but most of all I love Jesus Christ who is my Saviour and Lord.

Christine Liebrecht

Grade 6 subjects, English

With great excitement I am starting my second year at HOPAC teaching Grade 6 and Grade 7 English, as well as Grade 6

Science, Bible and homeroom. After graduating from the University of Alberta in Canada, I taught two years at a French

Immersion school in a small rural town. I then moved back to my home city of Calgary, where I taught six years at an elite private Christian School. In obedience to God’s moving in my life, I then moved to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and taught at a small school for expatriate missionary children through a medical ministry in a very remote area. Since then, I

Teacher Bios

spent one year back in Canada connecting with family, friends and my home church. During that time, God directed me to

Haven of Peace Academy and I moved to Tanzania in 2012. I know that Dar es Salaam is feeling more like home because even the traffic and crazy driving seems “normal”. I look forward to our year ahead together!

Winston Ly

Math

This is year three here at HOPAC. By heritage, I am fully Chinese, but by citizenship, I am fully American. I grew up and had lived my entire life in the same city for 24 years before moving to Dar es Salaam in August of 2011. I studied at Purdue

English as Second Languages. My wife and I are so blessed to serve the Lord at HOPAC. We really appreciate being part of the

HOPAC community.

Jane Moshi

English

This is my second year at HOPAC and I have enjoyed every minute spent with my students and the HOPAC community last year. I moved to Dar es Salaam in 2011 after being away from my country for more than 21 years. I taught in Zimbabwe for 3 years and then spent the rest of my teaching years at The Papua New Guinea University of Technology where I taught English

Language and Communication Skills. I obtained a degree in English Language from the University of DSM and a Master’s degree in Communication Studies from the University of Technology, Papua New Guinea. I consider working within a

Christian community such as the one at HOPAC and being involved with the young minds of grade 8, 9, 11, and 12 a blessing to me. I believe that this year will be a very joyous for me and above all for my students.

Louise Nissen

Psychology

I’m teaching AS psychology here at HOPAC. This year will be my 3rd at HOPAC but my 6th in Tanzania. I’m originally from

Denmark (a little country in the northern part of Europe). I finished my master degree in Psychology from the University of

Copenhagen in 2006. Before my husband, our three children, and I came to Tanzania, I worked as a school counselor and was also teaching at various occasions. To me the best part about teaching here at HOPAC is my students, and I look forward to seeing how God will guide and provide for each individual during the coming year.

Bob Peterson

Physics, Biology

I taught secondary science in the United States for 11 years prior to coming to HOPAC last year. I have had experience teaching Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science, but my favorite is Physics. This will be my second year at

HOPAC. I came here last year with my wife Heather and our three kids, Caleb, Kalei, and Addy, to support HOPAC and to see where God would have us help the local community and share God’s love with the people of Tanzania. I love my subject, the students, and this country. I consider it an honor to be a part of the HOPAC community and a part of Tanzania.

Jeremy Pickel

Jan Smits

Biology

For the last three years I have been teaching AS and A level Biology. The twelve years before that I have been serving the mission community in Tanzania as a missionary pilot with MAF, Mission Aviation Fellowship. However, before God called me to become a pilot I was trained as a biologist at the Agricultural University in Wageningen, the Netherlands where my major was in applied Ecology. I studied the morphology of Cichlids from Lake Victoria during a five year research project at the

University in Leiden, The Netherlands, for which I received my Doctorate. Studying the beauty of God’s creation is to me a never ending source of amazement and joy, which I love to share with my students.

Anja Smits

Service Learning

Our family comes from the Netherlands and moved to Tanzania in 1998 to work with Mission Aviation Fellowship. After living in Dodoma and Mwanza we came to Dar es Salaam in 2002. I was first involved in teaching English as a Second Language and later in Service Learning as well. The past few years I've been coordinating all Service projects that our secondary students are involved in. This year I will mainly be teaching and supporting the grade 11 and grade 12 students with their projects. I hold a MSc in biology and am certified to teach ESL. I am looking forward to see how HOPAC's students will serve God by serving the wider community in a variety of ways this year.

Abby Snyder

I am brand new to HOPAC this year. You might know me as the crazy mzungu with the bicycle. The crazy part is true.  I am teaching secondary English Literature (IGSCE, A, & AS levels) and primary swimming here at HOPAC. This is my third year teaching, and an entirely different environment from the large public school where I formerly taught in Indiana. I graduated from Liberty University with my Master of Arts in Teaching, with a focus in Secondary Education and English. I have been in

Tanzania for just over 3 months, and I love it so far. I’m excited for the year ahead and to see all the great things God will do.

(Janet), and serving as chaplain for the Primary and Secondary schools (Me). Janet and I have served as youth ministers for over 16 years in church settings in the USA. Our boys Gavin (grade 10) and Ethan (Grade 4) are enjoying the school and making new friends. I have a bachelor’s degree in religion from Regis University; Denver, CO and masters in Theology and

Mission from Fuller Theological Seminary; Pasadena, California. Janet's and my passion and calling is helping the young become healthy adults with a love for Jesus and his mission through the church. We are excited to do this with the students, staff and families of the HOPAC community.
