Stony Brook Village is located in an historic part of Long Island’s north shore with some
houses dating back to the 1600’s. As part of the larger Town of Brookhaven, Stony Brook has
retained the natural beauty of Long Island with its ancient trees, ponds and trails. Moderate
winters, low crime, and a scenic background make Stony Brook the perfect place for a family
to grow.
Stony Brook Hebrew Congregation (SBHC)
The Stony Brook Hebrew Congregation is an Orthodox shul with a warm
atmosphere and diverse membership welcoming all levels of observance. We are
a growing community of a friendly and intellectual nature which meets on the
campus of Stony Brook University. Our membership is comprised of University
personnel, members of the community at large, and both graduate and
undergraduate students. The Hebrew Congregation has a full range of services
during the week, on Shabbat and holidays. We also have a weekly Talmud
class and a range of other classes and courses are offered throughout the year.
Social events abound in the congregation: holiday celebrations, children’s
programs, chessed projects, barbecues, outings, and informal get-togethers.

Eruv

The Eruv in Stony Brook was built in 2008 under the guidance of Rabbi
Shimon Eider, zt”l. It encompasses the university and a large portion of the
surrounding housing. The Eruv is checked weekly under the supervision of
Rabbi Bergman.
Mikvah
There are two mikvaot in the Stony Brook area. One is located at the
Suffolk JCC in Commack, NY. The other is located at the Chabad of Coram in
Coram, NY. Both mikvaot are within 20 minutes of Stony Brook.
Schools
The Jewish Academy- The Jewish Academy of Commack has classes
from nursery to 7th grade. The Jewish Academy is a Modern Orthodox school
that employs the Tal Am program for Judaics. The Academy also places a
strong emphasis on science and technology. Free busing is provided by the
public school district for students in kindergarten and above. For more

Torah Tots- The Chabad of Stony Brook runs Torah Tots, a preschool
that goes from pre-nursery to kindergarten. Torah Tots strives to maximize
development of skills while also creating a nurturing environment. Busing is

Three Village Central School District- Public schools in Stony Brook are
part of the Three Village Central School District. The Three Village School
District scores in the top 10% of U.S. schools. It is without doubt the most
highly regarded in the county.

Kosher Food
Kosher food products including meat, poultry, cheese and challah are
available in local supermarkets such Stop & Shop, Trader Joe’s, and
Waldbaum’s. The following Kosher eateries also serve the Stony Brook
community:
Delancey Street Café- This meat café is located in the Student Union of
Stony Brook University, under the supervision of the Vaad of Queens. Delancey
Street offers a wide variety of lunch and dinner options. Packaged sandwiches
and salads from Delancey Street are offered at Stony Brook hospital as well.
Bagel Boss- A delicious and authentic NY bagel shop offering bagels, salads,
soups, daily specials and a variety of other dairy and pareve options. Bagel
Boss is under the supervision of Rabbi Asher Schechter.
JCC
The Suffolk Jewish Community Center is located in neighboring
Commack, NY about 20 minutes from Stony Brook. The JCC is equipped with a
gym, swimming pool, and tennis courts. The JCC runs regular program for the

Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is located in
neighboring Commack, about 20 minutes from Stony Brook.

Transportation
Airport- Long Island Islip Macarthur Airport is the nearest airport to
Stony Brook in nearby Islip, about 25 minutes from Stony Brook. More

Airport and LaGuardia Airport are also options, offering more flights and
airlines, but at a further distance.
Train- The Long Island Railroad stops at Stony Brook station. Schedules
