Supplemental Coursework
Why did SJSU implement programspecific coursework criteria for these
programs?
Transfer Applicants Only:
Beginning Fall 2016, a select
number of programs will give
preference in the impaction
process to transfer applicants
who have completed programspecific preparatory
coursework.
SJSU has determined that the completion
of program-specific coursework or an
Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) as
approved in our impaction plan and listed
on our Supplemental Criteria for Transfer
Applicants pages, will support successful
completion of these degree programs
and timely graduation.

Impaction at SJSU - Selection Process
 SJSU is impacted in every undergraduate major – we have a greater number of
applicants than available spaces - sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction
• Applicants are ranked by class level and intended major
 Freshmen are ranked on a combination of official SAT or ACT scores and self-
reported GPA for A to G subjects (EI or Eligibility Index)
 Upper Division Transfer applicants are ranked on self-reported GPA with the
following exception:
 Beginning Fall 2016, some programs will give preference to applicants
who have completed major-specific preparatory coursework or an
Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/program-specificcoursework/index.html
Impaction at SJSU – The Math
 Determining the correct number of admits for the institution
• Total enrollment target for SJSU is determined by the Chancellor’s Office
 Targets are delivered as the number for Full Time Equivalent (FTEs)
CA Residents enrolled for the College Year (Summer, Fall, and Spring
enrollment divided by two)
• University capacity for new admits is presented by OIEA (Joint Enrollment
Planning Committee advises and Cabinet approves)
Impaction at SJSU – The Math
 Determining the correct number of admits by major
• Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Analytics (OIEA) works with the
Deans and designees to determine overall FTEs capacity for the college
(broken out by program)
 OIEA communicates program capacities (headcount) for enrolled
students and the show rate to Enrollment Services so that impaction
can be run
 Show Rate: the number of enrolled students divided by the
number of admits (we typically use a three year average)
Impaction at SJSU – The Math
 Assigned Undeclared:
• Applicants who do not make the threshold for their intended major are admitted
as “assigned undeclared” to the overall university capacity
• This is how SJSU shows preference to local applicants
 Freshman applicants are “local” if they have graduated from a high school in
Santa Clara County
 Transfer applicants are “local” if they have earned the majority of their
transferable units at a college located in Santa Clara or Santa Cruz County
 Historical Results by major are posted - http://info.sjsu.edu/webdbgen/narr/static/admission/impaction.html
