Students are to respond using opinions, disagreements

Students are to respond using opinions, disagreements, interpretations, connections, and similar
experiences to demonstrate that they are engaging in what they are reading. Here are examples of
what I am expecting from this unit.
Chapter 1 of Touching Spirit Bear
“Cole ducked away from Garvey. He hated being called Champ. And he hated being touched. Nobody
ever touched him except to hit him. That’s how it has been as long as he could remember.” (11)
Example entries:
1- Garvey cared about Cole because on page 11 he claps Cole on the back. In my experiences
when someone claps me on my back, they are usually trying to calm me down. Therefore I feel
Garvey I trying to soothe Cole.
2- I disagree with Cole’s statement that he does not like to be touched. On page 7 it states that
Cole cornered Peter and attacked him by hitting him with his bare fists. So if Cole does not like
to be touched, why is he touching other people?
3- I think Garvey really does care about Cole because on page 12 Garvey helps Cole written on an
application to help him get out of jail.
4- I feel Cole is rude because on page 13 Cole punches his fist in the air as Garvey is leaving him.
Cole then shouts that the world is full of suckers and fools and Garvey is at the top of the list.
5- I feel that Cole is disrespectful because on page 5 he spits into the wind the intention of hitting
Edwin in the shirt with his spit. Cole is actually surprised that Edwin does not respond the way
he was hoping.
