Allusions: allusion is a figure of speech that
indirectly refers to a literary or historical person,
place, event, or to another literary or artistic
work. Writers use allusions to add evocative
connotations, greater depth, and deeper meaning
to a text. However, in order for an allusion to
function effectively, the reader must be able to
recognize the reference and understand its
meaning

 For
example, when Mercutio, a character in
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, says, “O,
then I see Queen Mab hath been with you,”
he is alluding to Mab, a fairy queen.
Everyone in Shakespeare’s audience would
have easily recognized the allusion to a
character in popular folk tales.”


Reason for this text - Students should realize there are
clear links between classic myths, legends, plays, and
modern artistic creations. This poem and a video of its
performance illustrate this connection between the
words, characters, and themes of Shakespeare and the
creative artists who followed—including those who are
leading the way to new forms of expression in the 21st
century.

“Authors often draw on historical, literary, and
cultural sources for themes or topics, using their
own imagination to transform the source material
into their own original works of art. Just as
Shakespeare drew inspiration from earlier
sources, Kate Tempest attributes her inspiration
for “My Shakespeare” to the works of Shakespeare
himself.

“He’s in every lover who ever
stood alone beneath a window” is
an allusion, or reference, to the
famous balcony scene in Romeo
and Juliet.
The author uses this particular
allusion to advance the central
idea that Shakespeare is relevant
because the famous Romeo and
Juliet scene is still replicated in
many forms today.
Romeo and Juliet
Romeo is waiting under Juliet's window
and when he sees her, yearns for her
beauty. Juliet goes out onto the balcony
and, thinking she is alone, speaks. She
wishes Romeo was not a Montague and
that she was not a Capulet and professes
her love for Romeo. Romeo speaks out
that he will be baptized and change his
name. Juliet is surprised that someone
was listening to her and inquires who is
outside.Romeo answers. Juliet asks how
he got there and says it is
dangerous. Romeo thinks he is invincible
because of how much he loves Juliet. She
becomes embarrassed because he heard
her proclaim her love for him. Romeo
returns the proclamation of love.
Hamlet
Welcome to Elsinore, Denmark, land of a recently deceased
King who is pissed and likes to chill out in ghost form at
night on top of the castle. He has reason to be upset,
though, since the new King Claudius, husband of Queen
Gertrude, happens to be his own brother. (Must make family
holidays complicated.) Claudius has problems, too: Norway's
Prince Fortinbras has war on the brain, and his new stepson,
Hamlet, is being a bit of a PITA (pain in the ass) about
things, mostly because his mother (Gertrude) waited about
two seconds to get married after his father died.
1.Based on the storyline, name one present day
example of or reference to Hamlet. (ex. Mufasa’s ghost
(Simba’s father) that speaks to Simba in The Lion King)
2.Based on the storyline, what do you think is the
message or theme of Hamlet?
