Description/Objective

A complete review of algebra and problem-solving techniques to prepare students for pre-calculus. Topics include factoring; solving equations and inequalities, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions; and graphing techniques.

Course Outline

This is a general outline of the concepts that will be covered. This is subject to change depending on the pacing of the course. We may not get to cover trigonometry completely. We will also review fundamental algebra at points.

1. Fundamental Concepts of Functions: what is a function, finding function values, finding domain and range, operations on functions, and inverse functions.

2. Functions and Graphs: Properties of Functions and Their Graphs transformations of Functions,

3. Linear and Quadratic Functions: graphing, finding intercepts, finding slope and vertex, solving application problems

5. Exponential and Logarithmic Functions: Properties, Graphing, Exponential Growth and Decay, solving equations involving exponentials or logarithms.

6. Overview of Trigonometry: Definition and Properties of Sine, Cosine, and Tangent, Unit Circle, Graphs

Attendance policy

A student with more than three unexcused absences may be automatically withdrawn from the course. Excused absences are for emergencies and sanctioned university events; documentation may be required. If you know in advance you will be gone, let me know. Examples of unexcused absences: routine doctor’s appointments, academic advising, driving a friend whose car broke down, etc.

Technology policy

Laptops and tablets should only be out for homework discussion. Also, make sure you silence your cell phones and other devices when you are in class.
