Tennis Nova Scotia 2013 Presidents Report
About Tennis Nova Scotia
I am very pleased to report that we have had a fantastic year at Tennis Nova Scotia. The addition of Marijke Nel, Technical Director has made an incredible impact on our ability to grow the sport of tennis in this province. Tennis Nova Scotia is committed to making all of our provincial member clubs benefit in some way throughout the province, not just in HRM. Marijke has worked very hard to travel throughout this province in order to grow the sport at all levels.
We continue to drive in initiatives from Tennis Canada such as: Building Tennis Communities,
Rookie Tours, Tennis for Schools and Tennis Matters programming.
Roger Keating, our Executive Director continues to fulfill the mandates created by the Board based on our Strategic Plan.
Our Core Business Areas
• 1. Community Tennis Development
• 2. High Performance Development
• 3. Competitive Development
• 4 .Technical Leadership
• 5. Resource Development
Our TNS Board continues to work on many facets of TNS governance responsibilities.
Communication to our membership continues to be a top priority for TNS staff. Email announcements, enewsletters and Tweets now are part of our regular communication strategies.
Member clubs have seen more involvement by our staff in tournaments, special programs, high performance, fundraising and visits. It is our goal moving forward to continue these relationships with our member clubs as it is the foundation of our association.
2012-2013 has been a very busy year for tennis both in Nova Scotia and in Canada. The sport has witnessed tremendous national recognition with our Canadian professional players performing so well on the national stage.
5
Our Nova Scotia Canada Games tennis team performed very well at this year’s event in
Sherbrooke Quebec placing 6 th overall. Congratulations Allison Chandler, Michaela Pugsley,
Ramona Rafiq, Lejla Hadzimurtezik, Brent Wilkins, Duncan Addison, Alistair Chauhan and John
Oxner
I would also like to congratulate our 15 amateur masters players who competed in the 2012
Senior Nationals. Most notably Andrew Oxner for winning both the indoor and outdoor over 40.
Congratulations to everyone who competed.
The Bell and Grant Nova Scotia Open continues to be our marques provincial tournament. Once again thank you to all participants, sponsors and volunteers for making it such a great success.
We will continue to look for ways to improve the player experience
Tennis Canada has initiated a new ranking system, which will come into effect January 2014.
2012 and 2013 saw the beginning of the migration of the Rogers System to the new rounds based system.
A new tournament software system initiated in 2012 was not without challenges. Our staff worked closely with Tennis Canada to try and work out the many bugs associated with the VR system.
As President of TNS, I continue to work very closely with my counterparts across the country to develop best practices and cohesive strategies in order to grow the sport throughout Canada.
The Council of Provinces helps Tennis Canada determine the requirements for support by the
National body back to the provinces. Tennis Canada has a strong mandate for new facility advocacy. A regional centre to help grow the sport in Atlantic Canada has been approved for funding support in Atlantic Canada by Tennis Canada. Halifax has been chosen as the preference site along with Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Calgary. TNS executives have been busy helping support this important initiative.

Fiscal 2013 Summary
Fiscal 2013 was a strong year from a financial standpoint for Tennis Nova Scotia (“TNS”, “We” or the
“Association”) as we saw significant increases in funding from Tennis Canada. Similarly, this led to increased spending as TNS increased its involvement in tournaments as well as taking on a new position,
Technical Director (“TD”), to help our Executive Director (“ED”) grow the sport in Nova Scotia. On an overall basis, we saw a surplus in the year mainly due to this position being vacant for a large portion of the year, which led to a significant surplus in the year as the Association maintained similar funding, and sponsorship from the prior year.
The key financial highlights from the year are as follows:
Increase in tournament revenue as we saw more registrants entering tournaments in the year.
As a result, this also led to a significant increase in tournament expenses which is to be expected
Significant increase in funding from Tennis Canada as our President helps to grow that relationship and ensure this funding continues
Increase in salaries expense as TNS had a TD for a portion of the fiscal year
See Appendix A for the 2013 Financial Statements of TNS with comparative figures provided for fiscal
2012.
Fiscal 2014
Funding
Looking forward we expect our funding for the year will remain consistent with fiscal 2013 as we expect our major sources of funding to remain in place in the upcoming fiscal year; that being funding from
Tennis Canada, Sport Nova Scotia and tournament revenues.
Tennis Canada has agreed to provide TNS with funding of approximately $70,000 of for the 2013 calendar year which we hope to increase for the 2014 calendar year. In addition, we expect our funding from Sport NS Amateur Sport Funding to remain consistent with prior year. We received additional funding in the year relating to Canada Games which won’t be received in 2014, however, it is our hope that we can increase the regular funding received through work done by both our ED and our TD.
7
Expenditures
We are hoping to see an increase in expenditures in the year as the sport continues to grow. Our expenses are tied directly to the amount of players participating in the sport, whether that is on a recreational basis or participating in tournaments. In addition, given fiscal 2014 was a Canada Games year, we expected to see an increase in expenses relating to this.
Finally, we expect an increase in our salaries expenses from the prior year as we will now have a TD for a full fiscal year as opposed to last year where the position was vacant for several months. It is the
Association’s hope that with our TD we can get kids playing the sport at a younger age which in turn will help grow the sport and TNS influence in Nova Scotia.
Overall
On an overall basis, we expect to see our operations shift to more of a break even position. We do not expect, given the additional expenses incurred in the year as well as the onetime expenses relating to the Canada Games, for TNS to be operating at much of a surplus in fiscal 2014. Our hope is that Tennis
Canada as well as Sport Nova Scotia can see the growth we are experiencing in our sport in Nova Scotia and as such, increase the funding provided to ensure we can maintain our operations at or around a breakeven point.
Sincerely,
David Stewart
Treasurer and Board Member, Tennis Nova Scotia

TNS Communications Report 2013 - Kathy Russell:
Communication with our membership and the community at large remains a priority for TNS and significant aspects were achieved this year.
1. Regular Mailchimp emails and a newly developed TNS newsletter were sent to all TNS members within the database. The newsletter highlighted tournaments, clubs and facilities and achievements of our TNS juniors, masters, and competitive players.
2. Communication with Member Clubs – Significant efforts were made by the ED and the TD to reach out to the member clubs and visit with the club in person across the province. Not only was the effort made to increase information communication but during these visits the
TD provided clinics and coaching in formats that the clubs requested. There was also a
Club Presidents meeting held in December 2012.
3. Active Twitter account was started in 2012 and it currently has over 100 followers.
4. Active Facebook page was created with nearly 200 people following the TNS page. the Bylaws, Code of Conduct, and the Harassment and Abuse Policies.
5. The Website ( www.tennisnovascotia.ca
) is a prime method used by TNS to constantly maintain contact with the TNS membership as well as other players that may visit our website. It maintains the tournament schedule, updated event photographs, player results and accomplishments, as well as opportunities for players and coaches and other information for players.
6. The new V/R system was introduced in 2012 for use by all provincial organization by Tennis
Canada. There were challenges with the system and Tennis Canada continues to want to use this system and is making efforts to make the system easier for members to register for memberships as well events. The frustrations experienced by the TNS players were not unique and all provincial organizations are reporting similar comments and challenges.

The Provincial Masters Circuit is comprised of the following events:
DNTC Masters
Waeg Masters
South End Masters
Cape Breton Masters

Nova Scotia Open Masters
The John Fraser Memorial tennis event for master players will be held at the Daniel Nestor Tennis
Center on Saturday December 8 th and Sunday December 8 th 2013. This event will be comprised of 16 mixed doubles teams from Nova Scotia and PEI. The format will be a compass draw with all teams playing a total of 4 matches. Special thanks to Paul Richard for his time and effort in organizing this event.
TLANTIC
The featured Atlantic Tournaments are the Masters Grass Court Championships at Rustico PEI and the
East Coast Open, held in Moncton NB.
This year (2013) the East Coast Masters in Moncton ran into weather problems and was moved from
Moncton to Fredericton. This event has numerous players from Nova Scotia attending due to how well run this event is in terms of tennis and food provided. The Riverview Tennis Club, where all the Masters events are held, features 6 Har Tru courts.
The Rustico Resort in PEI is my most favorite tennis event of the summer to attend. The courts are real grass, 6 of them located just in front of the resort’s accommodations. This location is one of the most beautiful settings for a tennis tournament that you will see in Atlantic Canada. I would encourage everyone to attend this tournament, as playing on grass courts is a wonderful experience.

Tennis Canada News
Tennis Canada is implementing a new National Rankings system that will be effective as of January 1,
2014. As of that day, the existing head-to-head system will no longer be used for the National Rankings.
The new Rogers Rankings will be determined based on the number of rounds reached (similar method to that used by the ITF, ATP World Tour, and WTA). This system will be used on a 52-week rollover period and will include the player’s best results (number to be determined).
Special THANKS to all the masters’ tennis players in Nova Scotia, no matter what level you play; we appreciate your enthusiasm for the game we love. Together let’s make the upcoming tennis season of
2014 the best it can be.

Tennis is experiencing its fastest period of growth since 1970’s. It is a sport of a lifetime and is played equally between males and females.
Demographics of tennis community is such that it is a highly desirable group to target for companies that have broad based products and services they wish to promote and offer locally, Provincially and some
Nationally.
