A Letter to a Hindu" was a letter written by Leo
Tolstoy to Tarak Nath Das on 14 December 1908
 The letter caused the young Mohandas Gandhi to
write to the world-famous Tolstoy to ask for advice
and for permission to reprint the Letter in Gandhi's
own South African newspaper, Indian Opinion.
 In this letter, Tolstoy asked Indians to follow non
violence as their path to freedom and quoted from a
‘Hindu Voice’ X “The punishment of evil doers consists
in making them feel ashamed of themselves by doing
them a great kindness.”

The direct translation of this verse:
“Divide the distance you've run (longer side) into 8 equal
parts and discard one part from it. Then if you add half
the height to that, you'll get the karnam”
 This verse supposedly known to the ancient tamizh
masons was the ‘formula’ to calculate the ‘karnam’
which was essential to design inclined planes.
 Mathematically, this is a close approximation to what
we follow today.

example 1: Take a Right angled triangle with
sides 3 and 4 units.
Now as per the poem,
Hypotenuse = (7/8)*4 + 3/2 =5.

example 2, take a Right angled triangle with
sides 3 and 6
Hypotenuse = (7/8)*6 + 3/2 = 6.75
By the actual pythagorian theorem, Hypotenuse =
SQRT(6^2 + 3^2) = 6.71

In ancient times, Thamizh alphabets were used as
numerals and is still officially followed in Thamizh
speaking nations.
For instance, ka denotes 1, u denotes 2 and so on.
 When Tamilnadu government made it mandatory for films
to have titles in thamizh for
tax exemptions, a film with an english title put this tamil
numeral system to full effect.
 The film was renamed to _____ with the numeral
equivalent of the word signifying
its notorious english equivalent. Despite the clever
wordplay for tax exemption, the film was a box office
bomb.

Sundaram Balachander (Tamil: எஸ். பாலச்சந்தர்) (18
January 1927 – 13 April 1990), was born in Madras was an
Indian self-taught veena player. He was also an
accomplished film maker as a producer, director, music
director, actor, singer and dancer.
 He travelled all over the world, and won international
fame as an instrumentalist of rare repute. The famous
electric bassist Mark Egan cites Balachander as a major
influence on his music.
 His X shot to fame when in an aesthetically pleasing
coincidence, closely resembled his passion for playing the
instrument
