Business and Technology is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills to be an asset to the collaborative, global, and
innovative business world of today and tomorrow. Mastery use of spreadsheets and the ability to apply leadership skills to make
informed business decisions will be a highlight of this course for students. Publishing industry appropriate documents to model
effective communication and leadership will be demonstrated through project based learning. Students will use spreadsheet and
database software to manage data while analyzing, organizing and sharing data through visually appealing presentation.
Various forms of technologies will be used to expose students to resources, software, and applications of business practices.
Professional communication skills and practices, problem-solving, ethical and legal issues, and the impact of effective presentation
skills are enhances in this course to prepare students to be college and career ready. Employability skills are integrated into activities,
tasks, and projects to demonstrate the skills required by business and industry. Competencies in the co-curricular student organization,
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), are integral components of the employability skills standard for this course.
Business and Technology is the second course in the Business and Technology pathway in the Business Management and
Administration cluster. Students enrolled in this course should have successfully completed Introduction to Business and Technology.
Students will be encouraged to become Microsoft Office Specialist Certified (MOS) by taking the Certiport Microsoft Excel and/or
Access Exam.
COURSE STANDARDS:









BMA-BT-1 Demonstrate employability skills required by business and industry.
BMA-BT-2 Create, edit, and publish industry appropriate documents using technology as a tool to increase
productivity.
BMA-BT-3 Develop organizational communication skills through professional leadership, personal ethics, and
customer/business relationships.
BMA-BT-4 Manage data in spreadsheet software for effective use in a business environment.
BMA-BT-5 Master use of spreadsheet software to analyze, organize and share data from a spreadsheet while
presenting the data visually in a business environment.
BMA-BT-6 Develop creditable research skills to use information from a variety of sources.
BMA-BT-7 Acquire database skills to manage data in a business environment.
BMA-BT-8 Develop personal leadership skills to work on teams, teach others, serve customers, lead, negotiate,
and work effectively and efficiently in a business environment.
BMA-BT-9 Explore how related student organizations are integral parts of career and technology education
courses through leadership development, school and community service projects, entrepreneurship development,
and competitive events.
TEXTBOOKS:
The textbook for this course includes Access It 2E and Excel It 2E, BE Publishing, 2011, Microsoft The Hub Simulation Sets, BE
Publishing, 2011. A classroom set of textbooks are utilized. Books are not issued to the student. Students may see the teacher to sign
out a book overnight if necessary.
ATTENDANCE:
Students are expected to attend class daily. As this is a daily sequence course, missed time means that a student misses valuable parts
of continuous instruction. When absent, it is the student’s responsibility to see the teacher for any missed assignments. A student is
expected to submit or participate in any pre-announced assignments, projects, and/or test(s) upon the day they return to school. A
student with excessive absences will lose credit for the course if they are not passing at the end of the semester. Students with
excessive absences and are passing at the end of the semester may apply for an appeal, and if the appeal is approved, will receive
credit for the course.
CHEATING
ANY STUDENT FOUND GUILTY OF CHEATING WILL RECEIVE A ZERO! Cheating includes but is not limited to the
following.



Exchanging papers or files with another student
Copying files from another student
Talking or communicating (such as texting) during times when graded work is given
The following are general rules, which may be amended if necessary:
1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
2. Stay in your assigned seat daily unless you have permission to do otherwise.
3. Keep hands, feet, objects, and teasing to yourself at all times.
4. No chewing gum, eating food or candy or drinking beverages in class.
5. At the end of class, shut down/log off your computer PROPERLY (you will be given directions as how to do this).

Final Average is 80% of the 18 week average and the Final Exam 20%
“Attempted assignments” shall receive a grade of no less that 40%. This means that the assignment MUST be realistically
attempted! If a student chooses to just write his/her name on a paper and turn it in, the 40% will NOT be awarded. Any
work that is purposefully not attempted by a student shall receive a score of zero (0).
High school make-up work policies:
Students are encouraged and allowed to make up all missing work due to absence. Students who are absent, regardless of reason, may
schedule to make up any work missed within five days of their return to school. This includes In-School Suspension (ISS) and Outof-School Suspension (OSS). If a student is present and fails to turn in work, the students may submit the work based on the teacher’s
discretion and classroom policy, but points will be deducted.
**Please contact me as soon as possible if there is any question regarding your average or attendance. Please do not wait until
the end of the grading period to become concerned about your class grade. Students and parents can check on grades in
Infinite Campus at any time.
