Both hotels are in the two-star category and add a new dimension to the capital's budget accommodation portfolio. Located on Rua da Rosa in the heart of one of Lisbon's liveliest and most interesting quarters, the newly-opened Evidência Suites is housed in a delightful 1920s building where three 2-bedroom apartments and a top-floor penthouse cater for a mixed clientele of families, couples, golfers, business people and all other categories of visitor. Guests are eligible for a discount in the ground-floor bistro where lunch, dinner and even a late brunch are served, and for breakfast a pack is available for up to 4 persons at a charge of just 15 euros. Accommodation is air-conditioned and furnished with all mod cons such as free Wi-Fi, cable TV, DVD player and a well-equipped kitchenette, while a daily maid service is supplemented by fresh towels and bed linen every couple of days. Worth mentioning, likewise, are the splendid views to be had from the penthouse terrace, which faces onto Lisbon's top landmark, the ancient Castle of São Jorge. The home-from-home theme continues at the nearby Evidência Santa Catarina whose back-street location guarantees peace and comfort at an extremely affordable price. Less low-cost, more high-value is the essence of a stay at this unique budget property opened last spring with 16 rooms comprising 13 twins, 3 triples and a magnificent loft conversion where 14 bunk-style beds exist for a fixed rate of just 15 euros per person per night, whatever the season, with free Wi-Fi included. The show will focus on the masterpieces of Portuguese art: the Panels of S. Vicente, by Nuno Gonçalves. This exceptional triptych marks the start of a national affirmation of the Portuguese School of Fine Arts. The exhibit “Portuguese Primitives (1450-1550) the Century of Nuno Gonçalves” thus seeks to place in a modern context historic and ideological significance of the Portuguese Fine Arts School. Located on Rua das Janelas Verdes, in Lisboa, the National Art Museum is one of the most important Portuguese Museums, housing a vast and valuable collection of European paintings, decorative arts, jewellery, goldsmithery, as well as other oriental arts among other notable works of historic and artistic importance. Find more about this exhibit at http://www.mnarteantiga-ipmuseus.pt and at http://lisboainside.lpm.com.pt SECTION 3 – SPA/WELL-BEING IN PORTUGAL Spa and Well-Being in Portugal Portugal is often referred to as garden by the sea; green and inviting. For thousands of years the waters of Portugal have healed the sick, helped people to relax, recharge, and enjoy life. Today, dozens of historic spa resorts across Portugal have been reborn, their waters and palatial spas intact, but with new modern treatments, and a new focus on beauty and relaxation. From, north to south, spas like Vidago, Luso, Curia and Monchique are welcoming a new generation of spa goers with natural beauty, a rich heritage of luxury, and an authenticity that adds to the experience. Plan a stay in one of Portugal’s spas and enjoy one of the greatest and purest of the country’s natural assets – its water. Since 8 Roman times, the water in Portugal has been used for therapeutic purposes. So why not add other activities to your health and beauty program? Try canoeing along Portugal’s rivers and swimming in the spas’ pools or in natural pools. Our suggestions include: Relax in the North of Portugal and discover its sweeping landscapes. Its waters are rich and pure and, in its thermal spas, you can be sure of all round care and attention. In this region of mountainous landscapes and pure nature, the thermal spas are places to relax and restore energy. Here, spas also serve as bases for visits to local sites of special interest and discover their customs or enjoying some open-air recreation. In Minho, the thermal spa resorts are ideal for getting to historic towns and cities such as Braga, with all its gothic tradition, or Guimarães, the founding capital of Portugal and with a World Heritage historical site. The Peneda-Gerês National Park is replete with natural beauty spots and is well worth visiting. Its rivers and streams are great places to relax or do a little sport to boost the body as nature helps the soul. Further along in Trás-os-Montes, shades of green continue to prevail. The thermal waters are of particular quality with good restorative effects. Take walks or head out by bike or horse to discover the people and customs of Portugal’s north. The spas of São Pedro do Sul, Curia, Luso and Monfortinho are the most well known in Centro de Portugal Region. All of these spa towns also provide complementary entertainment and activities, both in the towns themselves and in the surrounding countryside. In Portugal you will also find excellent hotels where warm hospitality is as abundant as the healing waters. Top properties such the Ritz Four Seasons Lisbon, Pestana Palace, Lapa Palace, Corinthia Lisboa, Penha Longa Hotel & Golfe Resort, Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel, Palácio Estoril Hotel Golf& Spa, Aquapura Douro, H2otel, Reid’s Palace, Choupana Hills, Convento do Espinheiro Heritage Hotel, M'Ar de Ar Aqueduto Hotel, Quinta do Lago, Vila Vita Park, Vila Sol Algarve, Vila Monte Resort, The Lake Resort, Longevity wellness resort Monchique and many others. In Madeira, the CS Madeira Atlantic Resort & Sea Spa has recently opened its new CS Atlantic Spa. In Viseu, the Pousadas de Portugal opened last year its first spa in a Pousada - The Pousada's spa offers a wide range of services, including sauna, steam bath, tropical shower, ice fountain, massage rooms, relaxation room, Jacuzzi and gymnasium. The Sousa and Tâmega valleys, right in the heart of Northern Portugal, hold an important Romanesque heritage. Common signs hear witness to stories and legends born with the foundation of Portuguese Nationality and exhibit the important role 9 of this territory in the history of the nobility and religious orders in Portugal. This heritage is currently structured in the Route of the Romanesque, a touristic and cultural project that began, in 1998, within six municipalities of the Sousa Valley - Castelo de Paiva, Felgueiras, Lousada, Paços de Ferreira, Paredes and Penafiel, and has been extended, in 2010, to the remaining municipalities of the Tâmega region - Amarante, Baião, Celorico de Basto, Cinfães, Marco de Canaveses and Resende. This supra-municipal project joins together a common historical and cultural legacy. Anchored in great value and exceptional monuments, this Route intends to play a role of excellence in cultural touring, able to convert this region into a Romanesque landmark destination. The Route of the Romanesque invites visitors to go on a journey through History, enjoying moments of contemplation and sheer contact with the people of the region. Trails and paths await you for hiking or biking, in communion with Nature. The Paiva river challenges more daring people to an unique rafting experience. Festivals and processions lead you to the ancient markets, inspired by singular ways of dancing, playing and singing. Identity signs are also present in traditional arts and crafts, like embroidery, linen cloths and restoration of wooden art pieces and golden woodcarving. Experience the tastes and scents of the traditional cuisine and refresh yourself with the excellence of the “Vinho Verde” (green wine) produced in these lands. Find your perfect acommodation in the region’s countryside or have a relaxing walk in the lush environment of our centenary gardens, where time seems to stand still. Wherever you go, you will be welcomed by friendly and genuine people. The year 2010 symbolizes the recognition of the Route of the Romanesque, distinguished with four important national and international awards: the Medal of Touristic Merit, awarded by the Portuguese Government; the Portugal Tourism Award 2009, in the category "Public Project Rehabilitation", awarded by the National Institute “Turismo de Portugal”; the “Novo Norte” Award, in the category “Norte Civitas”, awarded by the North Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N); and, finally, the XXXV Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy International Trophy, assigned by the Editorial Ofice/Trade Leaders’ Club, during the FITUR - International Tourism Fair 2010, in Madrid. The airline is currently in negotiations to establish the base at Portela Airport, which is already served by Aer Lingus. It is believed that ensuring it can have its aircraft turned around within 25 minutes is one of the key issues to be thrashed out between the airline 10 and airport management. Ryanair already has a base in Portugal, at Porto. It is understood that the carrier is hoping to have the Lisbon base established by next summer. Following Ryanair's AGM last week, chief executive Michael O'Leary said that he's planning to open bases at most of the main European airports. "Increasingly in the future there's going to be a spread of bigger airports, as well as secondary ones," he said. Plans for the Lisbon base come as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said yesterday that international scheduled air passenger traffic rose 6.4pc in August compared to the corresponding month last year, while cargo levels jumped almost 20pc. Find more about at Ryanair website: www.ryanair.com Ryanair annouces 2 new routes and a 5th plane for his Oporto base. Ryanair announced that the airline will add a 5th aircraft to its Porto base, next Summer, as well as the increase of their offer with the launch of two new routes: Rome and La Rochelle. The new timetables are already available on the company website: www.ryanair.com EasyJet with new base in Lisbon EasyJet has announced another step forward in its expansion in Europe, with the opening of a new base in Portugal. Following the opening of the new base, easyJet expects to increase by about 1 million the number of passengers to and from Lisbon, for 3 years. Being the second largest airline in Lisbon Airport, easyJet will add to its existing 15 routes, about 10 new destinations for leisure and business. The base at Lisbon Airport will be easyJet’s 20th in Europe and 2nd in the Iberian Peninsula, enabling its continuing expansion, the development of new routes and the delivery of improved services to customers. Representing an investment of more than 300 million euros, the base will open by end of winter 2011, with capacity for up to seven Airbus 319. As a result of this investment, 2,000 jobs are expected to be created in the region, both directly and indirectly. Carolyn McCall, chief executive of easyJet, said: "We're making it easy to visit this beautiful country. As one of the most attractive European capitals, Lisbon already attracts 3.6 million tourists and 4 million visitors a year in business. The increase in easyJet fleet in Lisbon will stimulate demand and contribute to the increase in visitors by about 1 million passengers per year, with clear benefits for the Portuguese economy. On display will be a magnificent collection of 20th and 21st century British monumental sculptures by some of the great names in Modern and Contemporary Art. Part of the “Allgarve’10 Programme, the “Ten Monumental British Sculptures” exhibition will take place at the Cerro da Vila Museum and Archaeological Site in Vilamoura, in the council of Loulé, and will open on the 10th of September. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy these important works of art, perfectly integrated in the ruins of a Roman villa that testify the passage and the permanence in the region during nine centuries. This unique collection of sculptures of unquestionable artistic and aesthetic merit represents three generations of sculptors, from the traditional to the avant-garde, known as the “New British Sculpture”, such as Tony Cragg. Both Henry Moore, considered to be the forerunner of 20th century British sculpture, and his successor, Anthony Caro, are undoubtedly the bench mark for this varied and balanced exhibition, which runs from figurative and anthropomorphic representations to the most abstract and geometric forms, including the minimalist and the metaphoric, all this, enriched by a constant dialogue with their archaeological setting. Following José Berardo’s motto “Great works of art are only great when accessible, understood, seen and admired by all”, “Ten Monumental British Sculptures” will run for a record period of one year and will be one of the high points of “Allgarve’10” because, in addition to ensuring the continuity of the programme, of which the 2011 edition will be the 5th, it will be bringing culture to the heart of the Algarve, to Vilamoura, where the largest tourist complex in Europe is being built. 12 It should be pointed out that the majority of the sculptures being shown in this exhibition were recently acquired by the Berardo Collection from the Cass Sculpture Foundation, in the U.K., which is dedicated to the support and research of 21st century British sculpture with the aim of making British sculpture known all over Europe. The works acquired include Ace of Diamonds III (2003) in stainless steel by Lynn Chadwick; Register by Peter Burke (2003), composed of 2,100 cast iron copies of the artist’s hand; Looking Back (2005), the female figure in bronze by Zadok Ben-David; Temple by Allen Jones (1997); Walls of Sound by William Furlong, consisting of steel walls with audio installation (1998); and Line of Thought by Tony Cragg (2006). The exhibition “Ten British Monumental Sculptures” is presented by The Berardo Collection, Portugal Tourism Board, Algarve Tourism Board, the Loulé Town Hall, Lusort and Inframoura. The exhibition can be visited daily from 09.30am - 12.30pm and from 2pm - 6pm, until 9 September 2011. The tickets have a price of 5€. SECTION 11 – ALGARVE MEDITERRANEAN DIET Algarve Mediterranean Diet Although the waters bathing the coast of the Algarve are actually those of the Atlantic Ocean, the region has always benefited from strong Mediterranean influences. Many peoples from Mediterranean lands have settled here, among them Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs. The currents of warm air from the Mediterranean have had their part to play in the temperate climate of the region, which in turn has always had an effect on the way in which the soil is used to cultivate crops. 16 Perhaps the most genuine manifestation of a people’s culture is its cuisine and the typical Mediterranean tendencies of the Algarve cuisine are a reflection of the many cultural influences that have so enriched the region. This book is intended as an important contribution to promoting the Algarve Mediterranean Diet, not only because of the recipes featured and the presentation of the local restaurants where Mediterranean flavours may be sampled, but also because it looks at the historical and cultural context that led to the diet, the principles that sustain it and the benefits it proportions. The full digital version of the book Algarve Mediterranean Diet can be downloaded using the links below: http://www.algarverural.globalgarve.pt/site/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=41 SECTION 12 - ITINERARY SUGGESTION: ISLANDS FOR LOVERS The archipelago of Madeira is synonymous with charm and sophistication, making it the ideal place for a holiday tour filled with romantic possibilities. In Funchal, let yourself be charmed by the bright colours of the Mercado dos Lavradores, a market where flowers, fruit and the typical island costumes of the stallholders all combine to provide a mosaic that is full of life. Only a short distance away, you can take the cable car up to Monte and the hilltop from where, in the company of your loved one, you can look out over the bay dotted with yachts bobbing up and down on the open sea. When you arrive at the top, make sure to prolong your peaceful stroll through the superb Monte Palace Tropical Garden. In the heart of the Madeira Natural Park, at Ribeiro Frio, it’s time to take a brief pause and enjoy lunch in good company, the two of you surrounded by the lush and exuberant landscape of the laurisilva (laurel) forest, almost unchanged since it was first seen by the discoverers of the island more than five centuries ago. Either before or after this, make your way up to the Pico do Areeiro, the island’s third highest point at an altitude of 1818 metres. Here, you and your loved one can stand above the clouds and enjoy a spectacular view, right in the very heart of Madeira. Return to Funchal for an entirely different panoramic view, this time observing the island from a helicopter. Or perhaps seeing how the sun paints Madeira in various shades of orange, by taking a boat ride at dusk. And why not sleep in an old summer estate, now specially converted for tourist purposes and providing just the right atmosphere for making the most of a great love? For your second day, we recommend a mini-cruise to Porto Santo, the ideal solution for enjoying that special moment. In this Atlantic haven, take a stroll along the golden sandy beach and discover the island’s unique character. Make the most of this paradise of peace and quiet to spend a morning close to heaven by trying one of the relaxation treatment programmes at the Thalassotherapy Clinic. In Calheta, the view over the beach provides an excellent setting for lunch and for enjoying some pleasant moments together. Continue your discovery of Porto Santo, by travelling to the easternmost tip of this small island and making your way up to the Miradouro das Flores, from where you can end these dream-like days spent with your partner with an entirely different view of Madeira, now floating before you in the distance like a garden growing in the middle of the sea.
