Evidência Hotels group Expands in Lisbon
The Evidência Hotels group has increased its number of Lisbon properties from two to four with the opening of new units in the
Bairro Alto district of the city. Both hotels are in the two-star category and add a new dimension to the capital's budget
accommodation portfolio.
Located on Rua da Rosa in the heart of one of Lisbon's liveliest and most interesting quarters, the newly-opened Evidência Suites is
housed in a delightful 1920s building where three 2-bedroom apartments and a top-floor penthouse cater for a mixed clientele of
families, couples, golfers, business people and all other categories of visitor.
Guests are eligible for a discount in the ground-floor bistro where lunch, dinner and even a late brunch are served, and for breakfast
a pack is available for up to 4 persons at a charge of just 15 euros.
Accommodation is air-conditioned and furnished with all mod cons such as free Wi-Fi, cable TV, DVD player and a well-equipped
kitchenette, while a daily maid service is supplemented by fresh towels and bed linen every couple of days.
Worth mentioning, likewise, are the splendid views to be had from the penthouse terrace, which faces onto Lisbon's top landmark,
the ancient Castle of São Jorge.
The home-from-home theme continues at the nearby Evidência Santa Catarina whose back-street location guarantees peace and
comfort at an extremely affordable price.
Less low-cost, more high-value is the essence of a stay at this unique budget property opened last spring with 16 rooms comprising
13 twins, 3 triples and a magnificent loft conversion where 14 bunk-style beds exist for a fixed rate of just 15 euros per person per
night, whatever the season, with free Wi-Fi included.
Adding to the unconventional feel of the hotel, guests pick up their duvet and pillow at reception before heading up the stairs through
a bohemian bar and outdoor patio setting to the stylish bedrooms above.
At a cost of 27 euros per head including drinks, a catering service is an additional option for groups of 20-plus people with three
different kinds of menu available.

SECTION 2 – “THE CENTURY OF NUNO GONÇALVES” AT THE NATIONAL ART
MUSEUM
The National Art Museum hosts an exhibit of the works by Portuguese naif painters
(the first) from (1450-1550), revealing from October 28, the best of the Portuguese art
school during the 15th & 16th centuries.
The show will focus on the masterpieces of Portuguese art: the Panels of S. Vicente,
by Nuno Gonçalves. This exceptional triptych marks the start of a national affirmation
of the Portuguese School of Fine Arts.
The exhibit “Portuguese Primitives (1450-1550) the Century of Nuno Gonçalves” thus
seeks to place in a modern context historic and ideological significance of the
Portuguese Fine Arts School.
Located on Rua das Janelas Verdes, in Lisboa, the National Art Museum is one of the most important Portuguese Museums,
housing a vast and valuable collection of European paintings, decorative arts, jewellery, goldsmithery, as well as other oriental arts
among other notable works of historic and artistic importance.

TAP Cargo has launched its new website with an updated look that is dynamic and easy to navigate, now available at

Ryanair targets main airports, prepares for landing in Lisbon
Ryanair is considering the opening of a new base in Portugal's capital Lisbon in a move that will set the airline further on a trajectory
of establishing a presence in main airports as it attempts to continue its expansion.
The airline is currently in negotiations to establish the base at Portela Airport, which is already served by Aer Lingus. It is believed
that ensuring it can have its aircraft turned around within 25 minutes is one of the key issues to be thrashed out between the airline

and airport management.
Ryanair already has a base in Portugal, at Porto. It is understood that the carrier is hoping to have the Lisbon base established by
next summer.
Following Ryanair's AGM last week, chief executive Michael O'Leary said that he's planning to open bases at most of the main
European airports. "Increasingly in the future there's going to be a spread of bigger airports, as well as secondary ones," he said.
Plans for the Lisbon base come as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said yesterday that international scheduled air
passenger traffic rose 6.4pc in August compared to the corresponding month last year, while cargo levels jumped almost 20pc.

Ryanair announced that the airline will add a 5th aircraft to its Porto base, next Summer, as well as the increase of their offer with
the launch of two new routes: Rome and La Rochelle.

EasyJet with new base in Lisbon
EasyJet has announced another step forward in its expansion in Europe, with the opening of a new base in Portugal.
Following the opening of the new base, easyJet expects to increase by about 1 million the number of passengers to and from
Lisbon, for 3 years. Being the second largest airline in Lisbon Airport, easyJet will add to its existing 15 routes, about 10 new
destinations for leisure and business.
The base at Lisbon Airport will be easyJet’s 20th in Europe and 2nd in the Iberian Peninsula, enabling its continuing expansion, the
development of new routes and the delivery of improved services to customers. Representing an investment of more than 300
million euros, the base will open by end of winter 2011, with capacity for up to seven Airbus 319. As a result of this investment,
2,000 jobs are expected to be created in the region, both directly and indirectly.
Carolyn McCall, chief executive of easyJet, said: "We're making it easy to visit this beautiful country. As one of the most attractive
European capitals, Lisbon already attracts 3.6 million tourists and 4 million visitors a year in business. The increase in easyJet fleet
in Lisbon will stimulate demand and contribute to the increase in visitors by about 1 million passengers per year, with clear benefits
for the Portuguese economy.
We also hope to give the Portuguese the opportunity to travel to new destinations. Portugal has identified the need to improve air
links with other European bases and easyJet provides an adequate service to all passengers needs. We have transported 20% of
passengers in business throughout Europe and hope to contribute to future economic growth”.
EasyJet operates in Portugal since 1999 and flies currently from 4 Portuguese airports - Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Funchal, carrying
over 3.4 million passengers per year to Portugal.
At the ceremony in Lisbon Airport, Carolyn McCall and Prime Minister José Sócrates baptised the new easyJet aircraft A-319 "Pride
of Lisbon", as a symbol of the commitment of the Portuguese market with easyJet. The new base will promote connections to
several destinations throughout easyJet network, no. 1 in Europe, with more than 500 routes between 123 airports in 29 countries.

Royal Air Maroc with new routes to Portugal
Oporto-Casablanca and Lisbon-Marrakech are two new routes from the company Royal Air Maroc. These two new direct flights join
the already existing route: Lisbon-Casablanca.
The route between Lisbon-Marrakech started last 31st October (four times per week) and the route Oporto-Casablanca will start on
18th December (three times per week).
With these new routes, Royal Air Maroc will increase their weekly offer to Portugal from seven to fourteen flights per week.

SECTION 7 – EXHIBITION “TEN MONUMENTAL BRITISH SCULPTURES”
Exhibition “Ten Monumental British Sculptures”
The Berardo Collection has chosen Algarve to première what is considered to be one of the finest
collections of Contemporary and Modern Art in the world. On display will be a magnificent collection of 20th
and 21st century British monumental sculptures by some of the great names in Modern and Contemporary
Art.
Part of the “Allgarve’10 Programme, the “Ten Monumental British Sculptures” exhibition will take place at
the Cerro da Vila Museum and Archaeological Site in Vilamoura, in the council of Loulé, and will open on
the 10th of September. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy these important works of art, perfectly
integrated in the ruins of a Roman villa that testify the passage and the permanence in the region during
nine centuries.
This unique collection of sculptures of unquestionable artistic and aesthetic merit represents three generations of sculptors, from the
traditional to the avant-garde, known as the “New British Sculpture”, such as Tony Cragg.
Both Henry Moore, considered to be the forerunner of 20th century British sculpture, and his successor, Anthony Caro, are
undoubtedly the bench mark for this varied and balanced exhibition, which runs from figurative and anthropomorphic representations
to the most abstract and geometric forms, including the minimalist and the metaphoric, all this, enriched by a constant dialogue with
their archaeological setting.
Following José Berardo’s motto “Great works of art are only great when accessible, understood, seen and admired by all”, “Ten
Monumental British Sculptures” will run for a record period of one year and will be one of the high points of “Allgarve’10” because, in
addition to ensuring the continuity of the programme, of which the 2011 edition will be the 5th, it will be bringing culture to the heart
of the Algarve, to Vilamoura, where the largest tourist complex in Europe is being built.

It should be pointed out that the majority of the sculptures being shown in this
exhibition were recently acquired by the Berardo Collection from the Cass Sculpture
Foundation, in the U.K., which is dedicated to the support and research of 21st century
British sculpture with the aim of making British sculpture known all over Europe.
The works acquired include Ace of Diamonds III (2003) in stainless steel by Lynn
Chadwick; Register by Peter Burke (2003), composed of 2,100 cast iron copies of the
artist’s hand; Looking Back (2005), the female figure in bronze by Zadok Ben-David;
Temple by Allen Jones (1997); Walls of Sound by William Furlong, consisting of steel
walls with audio installation (1998); and Line of Thought by Tony Cragg (2006).
The exhibition “Ten British Monumental Sculptures” is presented by The Berardo
Collection, Portugal Tourism Board, Algarve Tourism Board, the Loulé Town Hall, Lusort and Inframoura.
The exhibition can be visited daily from 09.30am - 12.30pm and from 2pm - 6pm, until 9 September 2011.

SECTION 12 - ITINERARY SUGGESTION: ISLANDS FOR LOVERS
The archipelago of Madeira is synonymous with charm and sophistication, making it the ideal place for a holiday tour filled with
romantic possibilities.
In Funchal, let yourself be charmed by the bright colours of the Mercado dos Lavradores, a market where
flowers, fruit and the typical island costumes of the stallholders all combine to provide a mosaic that is full
of life. Only a short distance away, you can take the cable car up to Monte and the hilltop from where, in
the company of your loved one, you can look out over the bay dotted with yachts bobbing up and down on
the open sea. When you arrive at the top, make sure to prolong your peaceful stroll through the superb
Monte Palace Tropical Garden.
In the heart of the Madeira Natural Park, at Ribeiro Frio, it’s time to take a brief pause and enjoy lunch in
good company, the two of you surrounded by the lush and exuberant landscape of the laurisilva (laurel)
forest, almost unchanged since it was first seen by the discoverers of the island more than five centuries
ago.
Either before or after this, make your way up to the Pico do Areeiro, the island’s
third highest point at an altitude of 1818 metres. Here, you and your loved one can
stand above the clouds and enjoy a spectacular view, right in the very heart of
Madeira.
Return to Funchal for an entirely different panoramic view, this time observing the
island from a helicopter. Or perhaps seeing how the sun paints Madeira in various

SECTION 14 – EXPO 2010: PORTUGAL PAVILION WINS DESIGN AWARD
EXPO 2010: Portugal pavilion wins Design Award
The closing Expo 2010 last week awarded 34 pavilions for their achievements
in theme development, creative display and pavilion design.
The awards were decided by a nine-member international evaluation
committee. The awards cover three aspects: Theme Development, Creative
Display and Pavilion Design. Each category also consisted of three levels:
Gold, Silver and Bronze. All pavilions were divided into four categories based
on their scale.
The Theme Development Award is decided by a pavilion’s relevance to Expo
2010 theme "Better City, Better Life," exhibition content, information in display,
educational value, solutions to sustainable urban development and innovation

capabilities.
The Portuguese pavilion won the gold in the c-category of best Pavilion Design. The Pavilion
Design Award focuses on a pavilion's outfit design, structure, construction and relevance to Expo
2010 theme "Better City, Better Life".
The project for the construction of the Pavilion was designed by the Portuguese architect Carlos
Couto, headquartered in Maca.
The Portugal Pavilion showed to the world the historical relationship between Portugal and China.
Within the scope of the theme of Expo 2010 Shanghai - “Better City, Better Life”, “Melhores Cidades, Maior Qualidade Vida” – the
project also pointed out to the advancements that the nation has made in the renewable energies area, and in the creation of
products that are innovative in matters of environment and energy.
Showing the country as a commercial and cultural plaza for the world, the Portugal Pavilion reflected the concept of sustainability in
the construction of buildings in contemporary cities, and highlights the country as a key element in the national policies, in economic
and environmental terms.
The exterior curtain walls and interior attaching veneers of the pavilion were all decorate with walls of cork, a Portuguese-sourced,
recyclable and environmentally friendly material. The exhibition area was divided into four sections of "moments," while supporting
facility areas included a dining area and wine tasting area. Entrance halls, digital screens and theme exhibition areas showcase
history, culture, economy and daily lives of Portugal. The relationship between Portugal and China during its history of about five
centuries and its influence on modern Portugal were also presented in the Portuguese pavilion.

Lisbon Architecture Triennial
Don’t miss the Lisbon Architecture Triennial, the largest event of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula.
The Triennial will be held for the second time in 2010. Based on the great quality and development of Portuguese
architecture, it is a forum designed for the discussion of the great questions facing contemporary architecture.
This year’s event will be dedicated to the theme “Let’s talk about houses”, which is a line taken from a poem by
Herberto Hélder. The Triennial will analyse the house as a link between architecture and people. This central theme is looked at
from different perspectives in three separate exhibitions – at the Electricity Museum, at the National Museum of Contemporary Art
and the Cascais Cultural Centre – and it will also be discussed at the International Conference attended by some of the most
important figures in architecture and contemporary thought.

Exhibition “Winds – Energy of the Discoveries”
Visit the Promontory of Sagres and explore the “Novos Ventos” (New winds) exhibition - an innovative approach to
the Portuguese discoveries and wind and sea energy.
The exhibition itinerary has seven stages, seven thematic sections with historical and scientific content,
establishing an analogy between technical innovations in the past - such as the navigational instruments that
enabled the Portuguese to discover new worlds in the 15th century - and modern technologies, with special emphasis on the use of
renewable energies. Located outdoors, this itinerary offers an amazing 3 km promenade, surrounded by the promontory’s unique
landscapes - that 600 years ago was considered to be the “end of the world”. In order to gain a better understanding of the historical
importance of this site – a point of passage for many 15th century navigators, cartographers and captains - visitors can watch a film
about Sagres and the Infante D. Henrique, that will be screened in the former munitions warehouse that has been converted into an
auditorium.
Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the Promontory and the Fortress of Sagres - a historical, cultural, natural and
landscape heritage site of incomparable value, located in the heart of the Nature Park of Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.

Ten monumental british sculptures
Don’t miss the exhibition of ten monumental contemporary sculptures at the archaeological site of Cerro da
Vila.

National Horse Fair

Lisbon Marathon
Every year in December, the streets of the Portuguese capital are invaded by the Lisbon Marathon –
Portugal’s oldest marathon event.
Departing from the emblematic Praça do Comércio, in front of the River Tagus, the athletes advance through
the city centre, passing through the historic zone of Belém, next to the Monastery of Jerónimos, listed as a

World Heritage site by UNESCO. Belém marks the beginning of the return journey to the Praça do Comércio where the finishing line
is located, in an itinerary that runs constantly alongside the river. The Lisbon Marathon involves a total distance of 42.195 km, in a
level trajectory involving two circuits. The event has been homologated by the AIMS and by the IAAF - the international associations
for the sector.
A Half Marathon will be organised in parallel -- open to all members of the general public and offering an excellent opportunity to get
to know the city of Lisbon.

Madeira Walking Festival
If you like walking, then come to Madeira in January and take part in a festival that will enable you to discover
some spectacular landscapes.
This event – which takes place over five consecutive days in the “levadas” and “veredas” mountain paths of the
islands of Madeira and Porto Santo is an organised programme of group walks accompanied by specialist guides. 20 walking routes
have been selected, all of which are classified and recommended by the Regional Government of Madeira. Participants can choose
from a list of four walks per day, ranked by different levels of difficulty and duration.
The Walking Festival offers a unique opportunity to get to know these enchanting islands, while you enjoy some active and healthy
holidays in direct contact with Nature.

MADEIRADIG
Annual MADEIRADIG festival takes place from 3rd- 6th December 2010
8th October 2010 – Calling all electro and digital music fans: this year’s MADEIRADIG festival
takes place from 3rd – 6th December 2010. For three days, the volcanic island is transformed
into a hotbed of digital culture and in order to safeguard Madeira’s natural beauty, the annual
festival is limited to a maximum of 200 guests.
The event, organised by ‘Digital in Berlin’ and first launched in 2004, brings together digital musicians, film producers, artists and
photographers from across the globe. It also seeks to inspire local Madeiran artists and promote local talent.
This year’s line up includes the minimalist electro beats of Ben Frost, the award winning innovative dance tunes of Janek Schaefer,
as well as the dreamy melodies of Richard Skelton, and many more.
When the music of the night draws to a close, visitors on the MADEIRADIG guest list can swap digital drumming for the lappings of
the ocean and join the DJs at their hotel accommodation – the Design Hotel Estalagem da Ponta do Sol. Guests also benefit from
special rates. The subtropical island enjoys minimum temperates of 17ºC all year round, offering digital music revellers the perfect
excuse to beat the winter blues.

17th European Cross Country Championships
The 17th European Championships in cross country will return to Portugal in 2010, at the famous trail crosse
Açoteias in Albufeira.
The event will be held on 12 December 2010 and will have in its program the races for Seniors, Under 23 and
Junior, both in the male and female.
