White Hart Lane Rec School threat to annexe part of park in 2004 successfully opposed by Friends of Parks demo and lobbying. Led to Council dropping similar threats to other parks. 3 New River Sports Centre Consortium of local sports organisations took over the management of this major sports facility previously run by the Council. 4 Larkspur Close Housing Estate 37 homes. A community that works – SAVED from demolition plans. Now are calling for Decent Homes Work improvements to estate. 5 Tower Gardens Estate Residents Association lobbied successfully in 2000s for £1m traffic calming and street scene improvements, the restoration of the disused Risley allotments site, heritage conservation and improvements to the local green space 6 The Selby Centre An inspirational multi-purpose community and social enterprise centre for over 100 local organisations. Run by the community since 1992, they now need long-term security/lease. 7 Bull Lane Playing Fields Sports Field under threat from being sold off for housing. Determined 30yr community campaign and alternative Community Plan has succeeded in saving the field and is negotiating to take it over and improve it for sports. 8 White Hart Lane Small Businesses 120 local businesses including the entire Peacock Industrial Estate threatened by mass demolition. Have organised their own Tottenham Businesses Group to fight to remain. 9 Stellar House and Altair Close Council estate under threat of 'redevelopment' 10 Antwerp Arms Pub Local pub serving the community since 1820. In 2014, faced with threat of conversion into flats for profit, customers set up the Antwerp Arms Association which had the building registered as a Community Asset and then raised the money to buy it from the developer and run it themselves. 11 Love Lane Housing Estate 297 homes face demolition & ‘redevelopment’ to make way for Spurs Walkway. Haringey Defend Council Housing is supporting this and many other estates under threat, calling for improvements not demolitions. Residents want to remain with council. Possible legal challenge to the scandalous ‘consultation’. 12 Coombes Croft Library Much-loved local library facing ‘redevelopment’ to make way for a Spurs ‘Walkway’. This library and others were briefly occupied by staff in the 1980s when cuts threatened their future. 13 Archway Metals Family business for more than 50 years, opposing demolition. Spurs want them out to facilitate the expansion of the football ground. . 14-23 Northumberland Park Area Housing Estates 1027 homes threatened with part or total demolition & ‘redevelopment’ Extensive new areas for demolition are now being proposed (Nov 2014). ‘Consultation’ in winter 2014/15. 24 Frederick Knight Sports Ground Community-run sports site taken over to prevent closure in the 1980s. 25 Waterside Centre, Stonebridge Lock In 2013 British Waterways wanted to close down the Waterside Centre for which public money was spent on building and used by a number of community groups. A coalition of these groups including Friends of Tottenham Marshes, The Canoeing Club and Living Under One Sun successfully applied to co-manage the centre on a temporary lease. 26 Campbell Court Council Sheltered Accommodation saved from closure following a campaign by the tenants association 27 Tottenham Community Sports Centre Community-run former Council venue 28 Bruce Castle Museum Historic Grade 1 listed building which was saved from closure to the public in 1995 after the launch of the Friends of Bruce Castle. Still faces funding threats. . 29 North London Community House Social centre bought, refurbished and managed by Turkish activists. 30 Mount Pleasant Rd Residents Association campaign in the 1980s led to traffic calming safety measures 31 Broadwater Farm Estate In the 1980s/90s the Council estate’s Youth Association and Residents Association successfully campaigned for a wide range of improvements, eg Community centre, workshops, health centre, concierges, landscaping, playgrounds, community murals, bus route. 32 Tangmere, Broadwater Farm 127 council flats. Decent Homes works need doing, but demolition & ‘redevelopment’ proposed 33 Lordship Recreation Ground Since 2001 the Friends of Lordship Rec and the Users Forum have led - in partnership with the Parks Service - the regeneration of this formerly-neglected major park eg a new river channel and bridges, staff depot, community food-growing garden, landscaping, new community-managed Hub building and restoration of historic features. 34 Salisbury Road Allotments Residents Association successfully campaigned to save and restore a derelict site in 2008 35 Redvers Road development 2005 residents' campaign failed to save Congregational Chapel, Wood Green's oldest public building, eventually demolished for ugly housing block. Led to launch of the very active Noel Park North Residents Association. 36 Wood Green High Road Area Six local Residents Associations produced an Audit in 2006 to campaign for a range of street scene improvements - many of which have since been implemented. 37 Heartlands area Major development site with a range of associated issues 38 Ducketts Common In the 2000s the Friends Group worked with Council parks service to renovate this run-down green space, now a very lively venue 39 Mannock Road Local people created a community orchard and helped achieve street scene improvements 40 Langham/Ivatt/Carlingford Area Recent ‘DIY Streets’ traffic calming and street scene improvements throughout the area 41 Milton Road and Willow Walk Estate Residents successfully campaigned for a community centre 42 43 44 45 46 47 Downhills Park Local people opposed school annexation of part of park in the late 1990s, then set up the first Friends of Park group in Tottenham. Worked in partnership with Council’s parks service to achieve many improvements, including a community cafe. Members set up 3 additional groups for neighbouring parks. Goan Centre Long-established community-run centre, campaigning to stay as site faces possible redevelopment in 2015. West Green Common Council and community agreed in 2012 to pedestrianise the north side to connect the ‘traffic island’ common to the school and park Black Boy Lane In the early 2000s the Residents Association and Council worked in partnership to implement improvements to front garden walls and flowerbeds along the street. Chestnuts Northside Residents Association successfully lobbied in mid-2000s for street trees, traffic calming, a community noticeboard, and alley-way improvements. Council aimed to evict, but have backed down since the groups formed an alliance to remain and manage it themselves. A ‘transitional’ management is in place. Laurels Health Centre Following lobbying by local residents in the 1990s this community well-being centre was set up. In the mid2000s there was a campaign against privatisation threats. Lawrence Road A street of industrial and commercial buildings being redeveloped, but there are controversies over the scale, the lack of affordable housing and a new local park, and the need to protect live/work units. Turner Avenue 83 council flats. Possible demolition & ‘redevelopment‘ proposed Watts Close, Seaford Road 11 prefab council homes face proposed demolition and ‘redevelopment’ Brunel Walk 36 Braemar Road Council homes face possible demolition & ‘redevelopment’ Edgecote Grove Estate In the 2000s the Residents Association worked with the Council to achieve a range of improvements to landscaping, infrastructure and services for their Council estate. Culvert Road Council is threatening that 30 council homes may face possible demolition & ‘redevelopment’ West Green Road West Green Road stakeholders group set up as a Council/Community partnership to improve the street scene and shopping areas. However many of the shops near Seven Sisters are opposing threats of evictions and demolition if the Council/developer plan for the area goes ahead rather than the Wards Corner Community Plan. Tottenham Chances This former British Legion club building on the High Rd faced closure and sell off, but some members held fast and turned it into a thriving independent arts centre. They are now expanding and improving facilities. Arriva Bus Garage Earmarked by Council for potential demolition and ‘redevelopment’ Tottenham Green Friends of Tottenham Green, backed by the local church and the Council, have led the renaissance of this previously-underused space – many improvements and lots of activities. CoHENEL College Active Union branch has campaigned against cuts and to protect wages Everybody’s Music Iconic local BME music outlet saved after community campaign and march. Wards Corner 10 year community / traders campaign to prevent Council/developer threats of eviction and demolition of this historic building, vibrant indoor market and surrounding shops and homes to make way for a corporate mall and luxury gated flats. Have created their own Community Plan for renewal of the site, which now has planning permission. They are calling for the Council to back the Community Plan. Tottenham Hale Industrial Estate Facing possible ‘mixed-use’ re-designation which could threaten local jobs. Lord Morrison Hall Community-run centre managed by Afro-International challenging Council eviction threats and seeking new lease. Holcombe Road A community plan for improvements to the food market and nearby alleys has been approved and is awaiting implementation. Tamar Way Council Housing Estate Residents have objected to their ‘Decent Homes’ works being put on hold, and a Council suggestion to demolish and ‘redevelop’. Chesnuts Road/Hamilton Close/Fairbanks Road Housing Estates 340 Council homes including Tamar Way threatened by an Council ‘Option review’ for transfer to Housing Association or demolition & ‘redevelopment’. Monument Way and Chesnuts Estate Green Space The Council evicted and demolished the afro-caribbean Welbourne Community Centre at the Tottenham Hale end of this site. Now the green space is under threat in latest Council proposals for the area, to be replaced by a long block of flats. Down Lane Park Friends group saw off threat to develop the southern end of the park for housing. Have since worked successfully in partnership with the Parks Service for a range of improvements to buildings, landscape and facilities. Living Under One Sun Allotment Collective, educational food-growing site, part of an organisation promoting healthy living and community-building skills. The Paddock Former neglected site now a community-run nature reserve Fountayne Road Live/Work Units Live/work tenants have launched campaign to defend their community. Markfield Park Friends Group and Parks service worked together to regenerate this previously run-down green space. Lemsford Close 46 Council homes facing threat of ‘redevelopment’ Leabank View 45 Council homes with green spaces and views over the river lea - facing threat of ‘redevelopment’ Grovelands Road 7 Council homes proposed for demolition & ‘redevelopment’ Imperial Wharf Craven Park Road/Maple Close The Council is conducting an Option Review involving transfer to a Housing Association and ‘redevelopment’ of this prime riverside site - the largest number of residents have said they want to stay and have ‘home improvement with the council’. Apex House Public building the Council controversially aims to sell to the Ward’s Corner private property developer Helston Court Housing Estate 45 council flats threatened by proposed demolition & ‘redevelopment’ Ermine Rd Plevna Crescent Green Space Abandoned green space around railway lines threatened by development - local campaign to save it as a nature reserve / park. St Ann’s Hospital User groups and campaigners have lobbied and campaigned for a number of years, with some success, to protect and improve health facilities and services based in Haringey’s only but run-down hospital site. Two-thirds of the site is now facing sell-off for housing development. Haringey Needs St Ann’s Hospital is calling for an Urgent Care Centre, a Child Development Centre, and for the mental health facilities and other public services to be improved. Hermitage Road A thousand live/work units set up a Tenants Association and launched a campaign to save, improve and help manage their site, and to oppose threatened evictions and demolitions. Gardens Area In the 2000s the local Residents Association achieved safer streets through traffic restrictions Doncaster Gdns Community Garden Local Residents Association created an award-winning Community Garden on derelict railway land Harringay Green Lanes Green Lanes Strategy Group consisting of Residents Associations, Traders and the Council have led on a range of improvements to the street scene. Finsbury Park Friends of Finsbury Park produced a vision for improvements to the park, then worked with the Parks Service to get Lottery funding to carry most of them through. Since then there have been concerns about increasing commercial events and privatisation of some facilities. Ferry Lane Estate The Ferry Lane Action Group has been active for 25 years successfully campaigning for a range of improvements to their Council estate and the surrounding area Please note this is a first draft.
