Objectives
2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based
on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting
three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and
ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.
2. NBT.B.9 Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the
properties of operations.
We will be covering the following pages in the Math Ready Common Core book.

Opening Hands On – distribute flats, rods, cubes, addition chart in columns and dry mark pens
for students to work in pairs to add three digit numbers on a number chart. Each day there will
be a list of different numbers on the promethean board for the students to complete. Then as a
pair they will come to the board and work and explain to the class how they made their answer. .
Teacher center: Remediation/skill building center. Teacher drives DI based on class work, tests, Iready reports, and ST math.
Hands on activity-(pg. 140 common core teacher manual) Distribute three dice, 10 cards with
three-digit numbers written on them, white boards and marking pens per pair of students.
Students will turn up one three digit card – this is the target number. First player rolls the dice,
arranges the digits to form a three digit number and records it on the white board. Second player
rolls the dice and tries to make a three digit number that, when added to the first number, has a

sum close to the three digit card without going over. If that student is successful they get a point.
Students switch turns and the game continues until the number cards have all be used.

Students will be given a list on numbers that they will have to write in expanded form. They will
then cut out the numbers and turn the cards face down. They will take turns picking two cards
and adding the numbers together in expanded form and then writing the answer in numerical
form.
Challenge Activity – Three separate center activities from IReady Center Activity (2.23, 2.25, and
2.27). Directions and supplies for each activity will be supplied for the center. One center is
mental math, one center is adding three digit numbers using the boxes supplied on the sheet for
expanded form, and the last center is when the student writes the numbers down, expands them
out on their own and adds them together to the correct sum. Students will work in pairs.
Exit slips, discussion, interactive math journal. Weekly test given on Friday.
Homework is given each week on Monday, and turned in on Friday.

I can add three digit numbers by using the expanded form of numbers.
Bellman’s Class will do a food activity in the life center on Thursday, November 20, 2014 and Ms.
Rouse’s Class will do a food activity in the life center on Friday, November 21, 2014. We will be
making Stone Soup for the end of our Thanksgiving week. Each student has to supply one preassigned can of vegetable, napkins, spoons, or bowls. Teacher will provide crock pot and meat for
the soup. In the afternoon, the day before the cooking will begin, TTW read the story, “Stone Soup”
to the class. Each class will be starting first thing in the morning so that the soup can cook all day.
Then enjoy our meal at the end of the day. They will be responsible for writing the recipe in their
journals and writing a descriptive paragraph of the soup.
