A User Guide for Making Accessible Webpages
University of Macau is committed to providing an equal opportunity for students with disability to succeed
in our university. To achieve the mission, the University has established the Committee on Student Disability
Services to ensure that students with disabilities are provided with proper services to meet their special
needs during their studies at UM.
In order to ensure the accessibility of information for students with visual impairment, we strongly
recommend all units to include the following accessibility functions in their webpages or other electronic
forms of information:
 Resizable Text
Provide resizable text so users with visual impairment can choose different font sizes when browsing
the webpage. (Please click HERE for more information.)
 Text-Only Version
Provide text-Only version, which is more convenient for users with visual impairment to navigate.
 Text and Background Color
Users with visual impairment, especially those with color deficiencies, have difficulty in reading text
that is in low color contrast against the background. Therefore, similar color tones for the webpage text
and background should be avoided. Or alternatively, different color schemes may be provided on the
webpage to meet the needs of users with color deficiencies. (Please click HERE for more information.)
 Space Between Rows
Provide enough space between each row so as to allow users with visually impairment an easier reading
experience.
 Background Music
Users with visual impairment often use text-to-speech computer software to convert the text into audio
output. In order to avoid interference or distraction, use of background music should be avoided. If
background music is unavoidable, a mechanism should be made available to pause or stop the audio.
(Please click HERE for more information.)
 Diagrams and Graphics
Users with visual impairment cannot access the graphic information (e.g. jpg or gif files) by using
text-to-speech computer software. When presenting graphic information on webpages, ALT Attribute
Function should be used to specify a text description for the image file, allowing the text-to-speech
computer software to convert the text description into audio output. (Please click HERE for the more
information.)
 Keyboard Operation
Users with visually impairment often have difficulty in operating a computer mouse that requires
eye-hand coordination. Therefore, all functionality of the webpage should be operable through a
keyboard interface. (Please click HERE for more information.)
