Road Trip Your challenge: The USA is about 3000 miles from coast to coast. Lots to see and explore if you’re the adventurous type. Unfortunately, gas prices are going through the roof, and families are worried that they won’t be able to take that cross-country trip in the family car this summer! You have been hired to prepare a report that will help families understand how much it will cost to fill up their tank and take that dream trip. Project planning: 1. TRAVEL ROUTE: Plan a trip across the country for your family that starts on the East Cost in a major US city and makes three stops in exciting places before arriving at a West Coast destination city (like Seattle, Las Angeles, or San Francisco). Calculate the total mileage of this trip. You’ll fly home, so it’s a one-way trip. Use MapQuest’s “Route Planner” to track each stage of the trip at mapquest.com. 2. VEHICLE INFO: Research the kind of car your family will take. Do you need an SUV? An RV? An economical hybrid? After you make your selection, you’ll need to find out how far the vehicle can travel on the highway on one tank of gas. (average highway mileage x gallons of gas held in the tank). Use carmax.com for this step. 3. GAS EXPENSE: Research gas prices for your trip. Use MapQuest’s “Gas Prices” feature to research the price of regular unleaded gas along your route. (total gas needed x gas price) 4. REPORT: Create a PowerPoint or poster that shows your family’s travel route, approximate fill-up stops/prices along the way, and total estimated fuel cost for the trip. Summarize the expenses and include a map of the route in a short report (at least 3 paragraphs). Use the attached planning page to organize your information. ***I will check your paragraph for correct spelling, grammar, and format, so be sure to proofread!!!
