Wilmington Grammar School SPE 2013 ADRIAN: Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to our annual Sports Presentation evening. I am ADRIAN NEWPORT and this is TOM HEMMINGS and we will be your comperes for the evening. This year we are delighted to be joined by Ben Quilter. This is the second time that Ben has visited Wilmington Grammar School for our Sports presentation evening, and we look forward to hearing from him later on this the evening. (pause) TOM: The evening is designed to recognise the efforts of students, staff and parents who contribute so much to the extra-curricular sport here at the school. The first part of the evening will be a brief summary of each year group’s main achievements. There is a more detailed account in the programme which you should have already received this evening. ADRIAN and TOM to do short speech to introduce themselves ADRIAN: Rugby Review 7 This season has been a very successful one for the Year 7 rugby team. The statistics are as follows: Played 10 Won 9 Lost 1 Points for Points against 369 56 1 Highlights of the season have to be the 26-14 win over Gravesend Grammar, the 52-12 win over local rivals Beths (on a day when the B team also beat Beths 56-5) and a closely-fought Met Kent League match against Hayes, which saw Wilmington run out 30-21 in the end. Indeed, the team remained unbeaten in the Met Kent League, winning all 4 matches played in it, and would surely have been in with a great chance of winning this competition if it had been played to its conclusion. Our only loss was against a strong Maidstone Grammar side, although the boys probably learned more from this defeat – especially about the importance of committing players to the ruck – than they did from some of their more easy victories. All of the squad members have been superb this season and will hopefully continue their development as rugby players throughout their time at the school. Special mention should go to Louis Hoad, for his committed captaincy in which he always led by example, Joel Chance, a player that most opposition sides seemed to find it almost impossible to tackle, Nick Branch, for his uncanny ability to see and exploit space, and George Pope for his exceptional finishing ability. TOM: Rugby Review Year 8 Last year, on the coach back to school, following a heavy defeat at the hands of Beths Grammar School Mr.Heath was (in a state of disappointment) foolish enough to enter into a conversation about treating the year 8 team to a McDonalds if they won the same match the next year. 2 Whilst Mr.Heath fully endorses healthy eating, and tries to avoid bribery whilst coaching, the fact that the Year 8 rugby team beat both Gravesend Grammar School and Beths Grammar School this year in subsequent weeks deserves recognition. Players came out of the woodwork to attend the celebrations, and rumour has it that Mr.Heath has been visiting payday loan to pay off the bill (and that is just from Ade’s repeat visit to the checkout). On a more serious note, the year 8 rugby squad has huge potential and glimpses were seen throughout this years matches. The Beths and Gravesend matches were highlights, but having more wins than loses is also a huge improvement from year 7. Mr.Heath and Mr.Palmer are looking forward to next year, and hoping for an even greater commitment from players to attend training and matches. As ever Mr.Green and Mr.Chitty also deserve a special thank you for all the time and support that continue to give to the squad. We wish Sam Chitty, Daniel Green, Daniel Turnham and Chiz all the best with their Kent trials. ADRIAN: Rugby Review 9 Despite the poor weather and serious injuries to key players, this season saw the team develop considerably. The squad played a total of 6 games winning 3 and losing 3. One of the most impressive victories for the team came at the very start of the season with a 50-0 win against Gravesend Grammar School. Another key win came in their final game of the season when the squad were back to full strength, winning 21-18 against Kemnal Technology College. A number of players developed considerably throughout the year including Charlie Spencer, Tom Cox and Jamie Anderson. 3 Ewan Rees has also developed into a key player for the squad and Will Pope, Tommy Slater and Alex Newins (Captain) both deserve a mention for their consistent and important forward play. TOM: Rugby Review Year 10 Last season the year 10 Rugby team had a very frustrating year. The bad weather meant that a lot of games were cancelled due to frozen pitches and snow. During the eight games we did play we made significant progress winning six including a great result against Hayes where we won 51-0. In other games against tough teams such as Kemnal and Bethany we both won with standout performances coming from players such as Elliot Godden, Sam Chance, Dan Bradshaw, Danny McNamara, and Tom Hemmings. Many players have also been very committed this year with players such as Jamie Peake really embracing his first season of school rugby. As a squad we have all agreed that the most improved player is Danny McNamara who has showed great progress and skill throughout the season and we hope that this continues in the future. Overall as a team we have enjoyed the season and wish to progress into next year with high hopes of winning even more games. ADRIAN: Rugby Review 11 Unfortunately, despite the eagerness of a number of players, the U16 team played only one game this season in the MetKent competition. Poor weather and unreliable opponents contributed to a frustrating year. Their one game was a tremendous victory against what has become our local rivals Hurstmere School. 4 Despite playing against a very strong team (Kent 2012 Shield Winners) the Wilmington team rolled back the years and produced a clinical performance full of effort, teamwork and enthusiasm, led by Greg Blanchard as captain. Despite only the one game another positive for this year was the call up to the senior 1st XV team for a number of Y11s including Greg Blanchard, Matt Jones, Tommy Strangeway, Max Uncles and Zach Stevens. TOM: Rugby Review 1st XV A slightly disappointing season this year for the senior side- a combination of poor weather, lack of fixtures and commitment ‘issues’ combining to result in more games being lost than won. Highlights of the season were wins in two 10 a-side tournaments at Charlton Park RFC and Tonbridge Juddians. The latter tournament in particular was very positive with three strong wins and good performances from the whole squad. Hopefully next year will see the sixth form team getting back to their best with the enthusiastic U16 players coming through to join the current squad. Notable mentions go to Captain James Mann, Seb Panas, Tom Wright and Jared Thurgood for their commitment and consistent performances. “Pause” Here is some footage from the Italy 2012 and Spain 2013 Rugby Tours (show video clip with soundtrack) Tom and Adrian Sit Down 5 ADRIAN: As a school we are very keen to recognise achievement and praise success and commitment, whilst at the same time maintaining a level of prestige associated with colours. This year students will be awarded with both Junior, half and full colours - for years 7 – 9 and Senior, half and full for years 10 – 13. The Coaches of the teams again award these. Over the May Half-Term holiday 43 students from years 7-9, accompanied by Mr Palmer, Mr Baker, Mr Benwell and Mr Jackson, took part in a rugby and football tour to Barcelona. This was the fourth European Sports Tour in as many years and proved to be the most successful to date for a number of reasons. The students played a total of six football games and five rugby games as well as taking many of the famous sights of Barcelona including Park Guell, Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Nou Camp, Las Ramblas and many others. Also included in the itinerary were trips to Mount Tibidabo Theme Park, Lloret de Mar Waterpark as well as a visit to see Espanyol vs Barcelona! Both squads were successful; the football teams winning four games and the rugby teams winning two games (as well as only losing one other game by one point). The tour was predominantly a huge success due to the attitude of the students- behaviour was outstanding and all three year groups mixed very well and supported each other throughout the week. Mr Jackson is putting together a documentary on the tour called ‘Living with Wilmo Lions’ which will hopefully being premiered at the school one evening in late July- further details to follow shortly. A big thank you to the students for making it such an enjoyable week! The football captains in Years 7-10 will now briefly review their highs and lows from their teams’ season. At Wilmington we are making real progress with our development of Squash as a competitive school sport. The Squash club has met regularly every Wednesday after School at the Whiteoak Centre Swanley. Derek Thompson our coach introduces routines to start each session and each session finishes with the boys playing each other in games where they can test their progress. Students from Years 8-11 have taken part and a great camaraderie has developed between all the boys. 15 Mr Sexton aka “Moodle,” is often scene taking to the squash court in his retro sports gear and joins in playing the better players and such is the progress made by some that he is often beaten by at least one player. The Year 8 players have all made great progress and are now ready to start trying their hand in competitive matches against other schools. Well done to Joel Hare, Barney Sitwell, Sam Thorold George Hughes and Daniel Turnham for the improvements you have made. Year 9 contains some of our strongest players – indeed Y9 represented the school against St Olaves recently obtaining a draw against a St Olave’s team consisting of Y13, Y10 andY 8s. Oscar Housego is our strongest player and Matthew Powell and Calum Andrews are also very strong players. Charlie Wisby Thomas made great progress when he avoids injury and Scott Servante has made huge progress only beginning squash last Autumn and now part of the school team. Matas Beisys has also made good steady progress since starting as a complete beginner Last December we competed in the Kent Schools Christmas Tournament at Mote Park Squash Club in Maidstone. We had a senior team consisting of Michael Essam, Tom Hemmings, Oliver Aslett and David Bevis from years 11 and 10. Our junior team was made up of 4 Year 9 students Oscar Housego, Matthew Powell, Calum Andrews and Charlie Wisby–Thomas. There was some excellent squash to enjoy with some very competitive matches against several other grammar schools. 16 The junior team won the junior tournament defeating Maidstone Grammar School. On 2nd July we go to the Kent Schools Summer Tournament where we finished as runners up last year, We have room for a few more squash players- beginners or improvers at the Wednesday Club at Whiteoak Swanley if you are interested please contact Mr Sexton. This is an annual night navigation exercise organised by the Dartford DofE forum. 17 The competition is open to all organisations and participants complete in teams of four covering either 15 miles for year 9-11 or 20 miles for sixth form students. This year junior full colours are awarded to Jordan Trinder, Elliott Woodall, Sebastian Terry and Lawrie Williams. They were the youngest team to complete the hike and finished in a time of 9 hours and 15 minutes, finishing 19th out of 41.Senior half colours have been awarded to the following students; Harry Ashdown, Josh Rogers, Cameron Hay and Matt Allen who completed the senior 20 mile route in a time of 8 hours and 53 minutes, finishing 8th out of 17. Toby Goodwin, Callum Howard, Ben Biggs and Ollie Hudson who completed the 15 mile junior route in 6 hours and 44 minutes placing them 3rd out of 41. Jamie Peake, Tom Hemmings, Sam Chance and Nathan Earnshaw who completed the 15 mile junior course in 6 hours and 44 placing them 1st in the competition. I would now like to invite ALL of these students up on to the stage. ADRIAN: This concludes the awarding of colours for this evening. TOM: SNOWSPORTS This year, as in previous years we entered 2 teams in the Kent Ski Championships which took place on Sunday. The Wilmington Grammar A Senior team consisted of Laurence Willows from Year 12 who now has a world ranking for Skicross, Matt Husband Jack Boxall and Sam Boorer from Year 10. 18 The B Junior team consisted of Will Pope and Tom Cox form Year 9 and Daniel Cunningham and Ryan Harrison from Year 7. Racers competed for both individual medals in their age groups (years 7-9 and 10 -13) and team medals in their age groups. Laurence was the fastest senior boy and posted the fasted time all day a blistering 10.05 seconds. The Senior team came third in their age group. On Thursday 14 February 40 students (year 7 through to sixth-formers) plus 5 staff made their way to Heathrow airport to take part in an adventure of a lifetime to California for WGSB’s annual Snowsports trip. The group stayed at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, on the Californian border. The hotel was simply amazing with it’s 50 lane bowling alley, cinema, theatre, lake golf driving range, golf simulator and Fun Quest arcade, most of which the students took part in as their evening activities. The students ate every evening at the Elements buffet at the hotel which included a vast range of global cuisines. Some students started out with crab followed by fillet steak, whereas others began with wonton soup followed by pizza. Needless to say breakfast was an assortment of traditional English with pancakes and syrup – Not something we recommend here of course with our healthy schools’ status! The students skied and boarded three resorts in Lake Tahoe - Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, and Homewood. Each resort had its own unique view of the Lake and wide open runs. 19 Our students progressed fantastically throughout the week with many of the beginners moving up to the intermediate group. The majority of students also managed some ‘big air’ by giving the snowpark a go. Following 5 days on the slopes, the group made their way back to San Francisco and stayed at the superb Radisson Hotel on Fisherman’s Wharf. This was a short walk from Pier 39 where the students were able to shop as well as go to Bubba Gump’s restaurant. The final day saw the majority of the students go to Alcatraz for a tour of the island and the jail house, where as others joined Mr Sexton and Smith on the trams in to the city centre. “PAUSE” We hope you enjoy the video… (show video clip of the SNOWSPORTS TRIP– 8 mins) BOTH TOM and ADRIAN STAND TOM: This evening we are delighted to be joined by Ben Quilter.
