Academic Success Plan
The Learning Center is committed to academic excellence at Wentworth. This self-paced guide will help you
achieve your academic goals. This plan is designed to be completed individually and/or discussed with your
academic advisor, a member of the Learning Center staff or any individual who supports your academic pursuits.
This plan will require you to think and reflect on your current learning habits, patterns and strategies as well as
your future. During this process, you will set specific goals and work to progress to these goals. If you have any
questions or would like to discuss this plan, please contact the Learning Center (tlc@wit.edu). We are happy to
meet with you and discuss ways you can become a more efficient and productive learner.

Study Cycle and Learning Strategies
The study cycle is one way to think about approaching academic learning. We recommend that you do
each step, but you can still see some results by only implementing one or two steps
Preview- Before class skim the chapter, the learning objectives
Preview
for the sections, the chapter summary, headings, bolded words,
graphics and captions. Note any questions.
Attend- Go to class, both mentally and physically. Take notes you
Attend
Review
Study
Assess
can read.
Review- Within 24 hours, review your notes and write a brief
summary. Note any questions or gaps and fill in the answers with
your book, friends and or asking questions in the next class
Study- Repetition and Active Engagement are required for
learning. Ask yourself questions like how, why and what if. Engage
in 3-5 Intense Study Sessions per day (see below). Do a weekend
review of all class materials and create a review sheet for each class
Assess- Perform checks on your learning. Could you explain this to
someone else? Pick a problem from the text book and try to
complete it. Are you learning effectively?
Intense Study Sessions
Repetition and Active Engagement are the keys, not long half-hearted study sessions. Each session
should last between 40-50 minutes and you should do 3-5 per day.



First 1-2 minutes- Set a realistic clear, objective, measurable goal (i.e. I am going read and
answer the learning questions in my Physics textbook for chapter 1.1)
35-45 minutes- Intensely interact with the material. Read text book and answer questions,
create a summary, distinguish between concepts, create new practice problems, make an
annotated equation sheet, fill in notes from your class etc.
5 minutes – review what you have done and note any gaps. Then take a short break.
Weekend Review
Each week take all of your notes, books, problem sets and perform a high level overview. Do not
reread everything. Look at the big picture items like headings, bolded words and equations. Reread
the chapter summaries and your review sheets. Ask yourself if you know and when to use the concepts
and try to make links between last week’s work and these weeks work.
