COURSE DESCRIPTION
The American Federal Government course will focus on the Constitution, Bill of Rights,
Constitutional Amendments, the major Supreme Court rulings, the Congress, the
Judiciary, Interest Groups, Media, and Political Parties and the Governing Process.
OBJECTIVES
The student will be able to identify or explain:
1. The historical background to the United States Constitution.
2. How the government works as outlined by the United States Constitution.
3. The historically important Supreme Court cases and their consequences.
4. The Bill of Rights and their expressions in the political and judicial process.
5. How political parties, interest groups, media, and individuals influence the
decision making in governmental institutions.
6. The structure and campaign strategies
7. The contrast between the workings of the Presidency, the Congress, and the
Judiciary.
8. How laws are created at the federal level.
9. The management process of congress, and the national bureaucracy
10. The Executive Cabinet and its workings

Class Rules
A. No exam may be made up unless the instructor is notified prior to the exam.
B. The final may not be made up.
C. The Student is responsible for the Student Code of Conduct.
D. All cell phones are to be turned off and placed on the desk.
E. Intellectual discussion, inquiry and debate are necessity to the learning process.
Professional inquiry and academic discussion based on evidence in a government
or historical textual document will be rewarded with a higher class participation
grade. However, non professional disruptive argumentative behavior that
impedes or obstructs the course instruction, as perceived by the instructor, will
result in disciplinary action.

G. Extra credit point projects will be made available to students for exams and daily
discussion.
Course Withdrawal: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not
exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for
the deadline that applies to the course(s). Begin the process with a
discussion with the faculty member assigned to the course. Contact the
Advisement Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course
('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Withdrawal and/or change
to an audit from a course after the drop/add period can alter the
financial aid award for the current and future semesters. Students may
receive an outstanding bill from TCC if the recalculation leaves a
balance due to TCC. Students who stop participating in the course and
fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have
financial aid consequences for the student.
