Bio 405 GALE 3 Plasma Membrane Assessment: Students will be given a list of several concepts that relate to the plasma membrane that were taught through the lecture with pictures and discussion, with questions and will construct a concept map of a membrane. Learning Goal: Students will understand that the plasma membrane will affect what material goes in and out of their cells and what happens if it is not there. Learning Experience: Students will be introduced to the plasma membrane through various models. Through power point and discussion they will learn the parts of the membrane and will become familiar with the importance of the membrane to a cell. Several questions will be asked to see if the students understand the material to be able to construct the concept map. Instructional Objectives: 1) After learning about cell membranes structure and function through various classroom experiences, students will draw a concept map to show their understanding of how the parts of a membrane work together to enable elements entry into and exit from a cell. 2) After learning about cell membranes structure and function through various classroom experiences, students will draw a concept map demonstrating their understanding of the importance of the plasma membrane to the cell and the body. They will do this by mapping all terms given with 85% accuracy. 3) In the process of making a concept map from a list of terms given at the conclusion of class discussion on cell membranes students will show, with 100% accuracy how substances enter and exit the cell through the plasma membrane. Benchmarks Every cell is covered by a membrane that controls what can enter and leave the cell Within the cells are specialized parts for the transport of materials, energy capture and release, protein building, waste disposal, passing information, and even movement 1) Using a formative assessment, questioning throughout the lesson, will show that the students are following along with what is being taught. The concept map will also show that the students are able to connect the material. In order to connect, they must first understand it. 2) Looking at the concept map and seeing how they connected them will show what they have learned. It could also show any misconceptions in the material that they have learned. Bio 405 3) This assignment will become a part of their notes. This experience is for them to be able to look at the plasma membrane and really see how the elements connect and it is a good connector for them to understand the principle about the membrane and why it is important. Plasma Membrane Concept Map Directions: Using the vocabulary words listed below and you can add other word to make it more understandable, create a concept map. Vocabulary Thermostat Balance Glucose Amino Acids Lipids Plasma Membrane Waste Homeostasis Selective permeability Screen (house Screen) Sodium Calcium Phospholipid Polar head Nonpolar tail Fatty Acid Phosphate group Phospholipid bilayer Cell Fluid mosaic model Proteins Cholesterol Transport protein Chemical Signals Bio 405
