Brain Pop – Electromagnetic Spectrum 1. The electromagnetic spectrum is the name for a bunch of types of radiation organized by the amounts of energy they carry. 2. It is not about radioactive material like plutonium, for example. 3. Radiation is any movement of energy through space. 4. You can think of radiation as a wave made up of moving electrical and magnetic fields. 5. Or you can think of radiation as a stream of particles called photons. Electromagnetic radiation ( EM) sometimes behaves as waves and sometimes as particles. 6. Starting with the lowest energy level with long wavelengths, the seven types of EM radiation are: radio waves, microwaves, infrared light, visible light, x-rays, and gamma rays. Higher energy radiation has shorter wavelength. 7. AM radio uses short, FM radio medium, and television high-energy wavelengths. 8. Stars in space can emit radio waves. 9. In a microwave oven, microwaves heat up the water molecules in food. 10.Infrared rays are emitted when an object produces heat. You can’t see them, but you do feel them. 11.Infrared radiation can take thermal image photographs called thermographs. 12. Our eyes perceive visible light as color. 13.In order from lowest to highest energy (wavelength), the visible colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. 14.Ultraviolet ray occur naturally in sunlight. The ozone layer blocks most of the UV radiation from reaching the Earth. 15.X-rays have a very high penetrating power. 16.Gamma Rays are the most energetic rays in the EM spectrum. 17.Most gamma rays that come in from space are absorbed by our atmosphere. 18.Gamma rays are also produced on Earth by high-energy explosions such as Nuclear explosions. 19.Gamma rays do lots of damage when they pass through living cells. 20.When electrons in an atom drop down an energy level or shell, they give off energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation. 21. The Sun, Earth, and stars all emit electromagnetic energy of various strengths. 22.All electromagnetic radiation moves through the universe at a constant speed of 300,000 kM/S, and can travel through the empty vacuum of outer space. 23.The higher energy of the wave, the more stuff it tends to pass through.
