Leanne Leuterio CGS 2100 Canon CSR Technology Department Lab Section #34 Eric Hoofnagle 2/01/13 Leuterio |2 anon Inc. has been growing in many ways through its innovative optical and imaging technology. The company was founded in the early 1940s by Takeshi Mitarai, who had the goal of creating the world’s best camera. This company worked to create Japan’s first 35mm camera and eventually the Hanson Canon camera was born along with the Canon brand. In the mid1990s Canon transformed their Premier Company Plan which focused more on their product and sales, to an “Excellent Global Company Plan”. Through this evolved plan, Canon Inc. seeks to enrich the community and environment behind the corporation’s philosophy of kyosei. “All people, regardless of race, religion, or culture, harmoniously living and working together into the future” is what the employees at Canon Inc. try to achieve through various impacting activities directly through the Canon Corporate Social Responsibility department. CSR-related Sections include environment, procurement, resources, accounting, legal, and public relations groups both stationed domestically in japan and overseas. As the Technology Director for the CSR departments, I have the duty of making sure all computers and laptops work efficiently and effectively. There are more than 5,000 employees with Canon Inc. The CSR department approximates 2,000 employees, which is a big portion of our company. The employees of this department make up about 1,500 individuals who work in a stationed office and 500 that work in the field activities around the globe. We currently have two CSR headquarters, one stationed in Japan and one in the United States. The current desktop computers at the United States CSR Headquarters are out dated since the launch of Canon’s Phase IV of the Excellent Global Corporation Plan in 2011.Since then, many of Canon CSR Technology Department Leuterio |3 Canon CSR’s focus was on supporting victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The CSR Environment department had volunteers and environmentalists that would help recover resources that were destroyed in the disaster. Now that two years have passed, a lot of CSR’s work has been moved back into the office as they focus on reaching out to new organizations, raising the community’s spirits, and advancing medical research and systems to help with disaster relief of Japan. The company’s need for updated desktop computers is essential for communicating with other companies and organizations as well as maintaining information and data for our own. Even though Canon has only two CSR headquarters, several employees are sent out on missions to Europe, Asia, and Oceania as well. Since a great deal of CSR’s work is still out in the field, laptops should also be updated to work as efficiently as the desktops used in the offices. The desktops that will be considered for the offices are between the Dell XPS 8500, the Samsung Series All in One, and the Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p. First we will look at the Dell XPS 8500 desktop for the offices. This computer is designed for small businesses but can still do the work for a corporation like Canon. This particular desktop that comes with a Dell UltraSharp™ 24" Monitor will cost $999.99. The processor will be an improvement from an Intel i3 processor to a new Intel® Core™ i7-3770 with 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz RAM for optimal computer application performance. This hard drive has a capacity of 1TB for all the information that will be stored in the office. Various additions are already Canon CSR Technology Department Leuterio |4 included with the system such as a 1 Year ProSupport Service, a Dell razor mouse, a Dell keyboard, and more (Dell Inc). The Samsung option would fulfill both functional and presentational needs for business. Canon wants to continue conducting business in the most advance ways as updated users of technology. This choice would be based on function as well as aesthetics with the All in One computer style. The processor of this computer isn’t as new as the Intel® Core™ i7-3770 in the Dell computer, but the Intel® Core™ i5-3470T will be able to handle the basic applications running for office work. This computer model also has a maximum capacity of 8GB RAM like the Dell computer. The size of this monitor is 22.6” wide and has a touch screen feature. With something as elegant as this computer model, it might not be as durable or last long with only a 1 year standard parts and labor warranty. The price of this computer is $1,099.99 which is more expensive that the Dell desktop with similar specs. The company wants to make a balanced purchase decision between function and aesthetics (Samsung). The ThinkCentre M92p is big on manageability with Intel® vPro™ technology and the ability to support up to 4 monitors. Having this many monitors may sound excessive, but having multiple monitors can serve the same purpose such as training and briefing employees that do not need to be assigned to a full desktop. Not all the Canon CSR Technology Department Leuterio |5 tasks under CSR offices will be strictly computer based. Running four monitors calls for a faster processer. This is where an Intel® Core™ i7-3770 processor can be used more efficiently. This computer also comes with 16GB DDR3 memory and up to 2 x 1TB hard drive for the best space storage. Graphics up to AMD Radeon™ HD 7450 is designed for the best image quality for presentations (Lenovo). Dell New Inspiron 17R Hp ENVY Ultrabook Lonovo ThinkPad Laptops are as essential as purchasing a computer for the company. The laptops that have been considered are the Dell New Inspiron 17R, the Hp ENVY Ultrabook, and the Lenovo ThinkPad Twist Multitouch Ultrabook. Most of the employees that will be working with laptops need specializations that can carry the task of a “mobile” office as the representative will reach out directly to different organizations. The Dell New Inspiron 17R has an Intel® Core™ i5-3317U can carry out the necessary tasks with 8GB Duel Channel DDR3 SDRAM, 1TB hard drive space, and a 17.3” HD screen for a price of $749.99. This laptop has all the basic specs that would be needed for the job, but there are still some additional improvements that can make this mobile office work like a full office (Dell Inc.). Canon CSR Technology Department Leuterio |6 The Hp ENVY Ultrabook also has an Intel Core i5-3317U processor, 4GB DDDR3 System memory, a 500 GB hard drive with a 15.6” display screen for $649.99 (Hp). This laptop has a good price for basic needs, but we are looking for a more reliable laptop for field activity purposes. The Lenovo ThinkPad option has an Intel Core i7-3517U processor which can perform tasks almost as fast as the Lenovo desktop option. Since this laptop will act as a “mobile office”, this can be necessary instead of excessive. This screen is 12.5” wide touch-twist screen and comes with an HD webcam which will be best for communication with headquarter offices (Lenovo). The desktop computer that has been decided for the office employees is the Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p for the ability to handle more than one monitors supported with an i7 processor, which would be appropriate for the tasks of training and presentation. The specs of this computer come at a reasonable price starting at $714, which is the cheapest option of the desktops available. Since the desktop tower is under the budget of $1,500 there are still funds to purchase the monitors. The 16GB RAM also helped make the decision because not many computers come with this option. This will also help with running several applications at one time. The Lenovo laptop is also the best option for the traveling employees because of its innovative design and optimal performance with an i7 processor as well. This laptop has a type of RAM that the other systems don’t offer. The SDRAM will prevent any information from being lost or corrupted if the RAM has any problems. The extra features that this laptop has such as webcam will also be important for holding video conferences. This choice is the most expensive choice for a laptop, but it best fulfills our needs while still being under the budget at $989.00. Canon CSR Technology Department Leuterio |7 Canon Inc. (2013).
