Grade 12 Test Review Outline Literary Terminology – Students should be familiar with the following terms: Assonance Consonance Alliteration Apostrophe Mood P.O.V. Modernist Free Verse Connotation Denotation Volta Caesura Tone Symbolism Feminist Futility Syntax English Sonnet Scansion Italian Sonnet Iambic Pentameter Enjambment Ballardian Dystopian Stream-of-Consciousness Sarcasm Theme Characterization Setting Content – Students should be familiar with the following pieces of literature: On Finding a Small Fly Crushed in a Book – Charles Tennyson Turner (poem) Ozymandias – Percy Bysshe Shelley (poem) Mirror – Sylvia Plath (poem) The Yellow Wall Paper – Charlotte Perkins Gilman (short story) The Lady in the Looking-Glass: A Reflection – Virginia Woolf (short story) Billenium – J.G. Ballard (short story) Format – Students will see the following 4 sections: A) Vocabulary (Literary Terminology) In the vocabulary section, you will need to match terms to their corresponding definitions. You will also need to provide explanations (in your own words) for a few key terms. 13 marks B) Poetry Interpretation (short answer) You will be asked to follow the sequence of analysis – as discussed in class – for one of the selected poems. 9 marks C) Short Story Analysis (short answer) You will be asked to answer a question based on a selected portion from the text of one of the short stories. 9 marks D) Reflection on Theme (short answer – making connections) You will be asked to comment on the overarching themes that are present across at least two of the works we have studied thus far. 9 marks Grading – Short answer questions will be graded in accordance with the AP rubric in the course syllabus. Literary Terminology questions will be marked right or wrong depending on the accuracy of the answers given. 40 marks total
