Introduction
• Name of poem and poet
• Answer question in a sentence -explain
what your main line of argument will be
(mentioning key words from the question)
Main Body
(include 3-4 main paragraphs)
• START with a topic sentence to introduce paragraph
(use linking words i.e firstly, alternative, to conclude)
• Statement needs to be made
• Evidence to support your statement/point
(quote or summarise an event from the text in your
own words)
eXplain/ discuss/ analyse your evidence–mention
technique if possible

• Your evaluative comment in relation to the question
Conclusion
 Make reference your main points
(look back at your topic sentences)
but without repeating them

statement drawing on all the points
you’ve made and reinforcing your
opening argument

What does this mean?
• How do language, form and structure create
certain effects in the poem
• Connect (explain) how techniques poet used
are linked to the presentation of: ideas,
theme, setting
• Evidence has to be provided for support and
relevant to the question

• Structure, style, language is

• Literary terminology should be used
