FIVE STEPS Step number one: Attention step ◦ Just like any well-developed speech intro finding a strategy to get your audience’s attention is the first step Step number two: NEED step ◦ Show the problem: ◦ Answer the question: Why is change needed? Third Step: SATISFACTION ◦ Describe and explain your solution(s) ◦ Provide evidence to support your position ◦ Show your audience how your belief system and/or the solutions you recommend will satisfy the need/solve the problem ◦ Fourth Step: VISUALIZATION ◦ Describe the benefits of adopting your position to the audience – use both logical and emotional appeals to convince your of the positive benefits ◦ Or develop the consequences of not adopting your position, belief, or proposal ◦ Or share both benefits and consequences ◦ Paint a word picture of the world for the benefits, consequences or both. In adopting your solution Fifth step – This step is often an excellent segue into the conclusion! CALL FOR ACTION Rally the troops Use specific language choices to ask your audience to committ!
