Framework for Ecodesign in the urban ecosystem (1)

Three building blocks

Participatory processes of all urban stakeholders

(including citizens) for building consensus around necessary actions to fulfil urban needs

Tapping into the many scales that exist in the “social space

” of an urban environment for mainstreaming Ecodesign product and services

Creating the right market conditions, with the right partnerships to increase chances of success for innovative products

=> Urban ecosystem backed by a variety of actors to create “shared value”

DEFRA 4E model provide opportunity for the public to participate in the debate (e.g. social networks, marketing, …) provide core infrastructure provide fiscal, legislative or accredited

Recommendations 1 :

Fostering result-driven innovation by incentivizing Ecodesign innovators to come up with ideas to cope with a defined urban challenge.

E.g. launching of a “Pampers Impact Bond” with the objectives to decrease the amount of nappies in households waste by 50%.

C2C Material bank

 Centre C2C material bank (sector specific)

 Give advises on the use of material and available solutions





Organise collective purchase of alternative and ecological materials

Provide knowledge-based recommendations at regional level

 Challenge/results driven network grounded on urban challenges for resilience and bringing together different types of stakeholders

 E.g. how can we limit the food chain in Brussels to three steps between the producer and the consumer?
