Readers’ Workshop: This month we started our unit entitled “Courageous Characters”. Students will be reading either Esperanza Rising written by Pam Munoz Ryan or The Giver written by Lois Lowry as a whole class novel. We will also be starting “Test Prep Fridays” to prepare our students for the New York State ELA Test in April. Writers’ Workshop: Students will be writing a realistic fiction story that has the theme of courage. This theme ties into readers’ workshop because the books that they are reading also carry the theme of courage throughout them. Social Studies In February, students are continuing to study the causes and effects of the Arab-Israeli Conflict. Analyzing the origins of this conflict will enable students to explore the current challenges in The Middle East. Students will watch clips from ABC News in class, to understand that this conflict has led to problems in today’s world. We will focus on recent protests in NYC and the stance American presidents have taken. Math The city task/midterms are complete. You will be able to see how your child did on them when you receive their progress report. Please remind your child that showing work is necessary, as mathematical work is how we support our answers. Also, remind your child to read the questions carefully and to check their answer to see if it addresses all aspects of the question. In February, we will be completing Unit 4Expressions and beginning Unit 5Equations. Science Science What’s the Matter for February? Matter is the matter! The students in Mr. Gebhardt’s science class will be investigating the materials that the earth, and the rest of the universe, are made of. Atoms, solids, liquids, gasses, viscosity, pressure, density, buoyancy, and the relationship that thermal energy has to all matter is on the agenda for the beginning of the month. We will then be researching how the thermal energy – matter relationship relates to our planet’s atmosphere and creates the weather including the frigid temperatures and many feet of snow we have experienced this winter so far. At this point, your child should be able to discuss the geography of The Middle East with you. Each student is responsible for knowing the location of each country in the region. Your child should have developed an opinion as to why this conflict started and should be able to discuss their opinion with you. Your child should also understand that The United Nations has failed to solve this problem and why the proposed partitions have not been successful. Please use your child’s DBQ Italian packet as a guide for discussing these topics. . February is a special month for Italians but most importantly for Venetians! Students at PS/ IS 102 will get to discover the beauty and glamour of the famous "Carnevale di Venezia"! Students will be given a brief introduction to its history and then be taken on a virtual tour of the magical city during this time of year. Students will complete the unit with the creation of their own Venetian masks!
