• Dred Scott v. Sandford 1857; Supreme Court
held that slavery could not be abolished
anywhere.
• North Angry
Missouri Compromise
1.) Missouri admitted to the union as a slave
state, balanced by the admission of Maine
2.) slavery excluded from all new states in the
Louisiana Purchase north of the southern
boundary of Missouri
Kansas Nebraska Act
• Kansas Nebraska Act – divided the Nebraska
Territory into Kansas and Nebraska.
• They would vote to decided on the issue of
slavery.
• Fighting breaks out in Kansas
John Brown’s Raid
• Abolitionist
• W/ friends conducted midnight raid on a
proslavery settlement in Kansas.
• Murdered five
• Eventually Kansas enters as free state.
South Carolina Secedes
• As soon as Lincoln is elected SC secedes.
• Eventually 10 more states.
Civil War 1861-1865
• First shots – Fort Sumter, April 1861
• First big Northern victory –Antietam
• Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation
ends slavery in rebelling states.
• Emancipation Proclamation extended the
North’s war aims to include abolition.
• Lincoln’s stated goal throughout the Civil War
was to restore the Union.
Civil War 1861-1865
• South surrenders (Lee) to North (Grant) at
Appomattox Court House, Virginia in April
1865.
• Lincoln assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.
Effect of Civil War
• More died than all other U.S. wars combined600,000
• 13th Amendment abolished slavery
• South in ruins
