11/5 Do Now

Today’s Do Now is a handout labeled Do Now.

Read the directions and complete the Do Now.

Gas particles…

Gas Properties

- Have mass

- Don’t attract or repel each other

- KE is directly related to T

- Are in constant random motion

…what property enables gases to cause global warming?

Greenhouse Gases

Learning Target:

• I can apply the behaviors of gases to explain global warming

• I can describe physical processes that result in the emission of green house gases

Reading Purpose:

• What unique gas property of greenhouse gases contributes to the warming of our planet Earth?

• What are the major sources of greenhouse gases?

Greenhouse Gases Key Points:

Key Point 1:

Unique GHG Property -

Key Point 2:

Sources of GHG -

Greenhouse Gas Evaluation Simulation

Question:

What are the greenhouse gases?

Which greenhouse gases absorb and reemit the most infrared energy?

Which greenhouse gases have the greatest impact on Earth’s temperature?

Opening the Lab Simulation

1. Go to phet.colorado.edu

2. Type Greenhouse Effect into the search bar and enter

3. Select the The Greenhouse Effect listing

4. Click on Run Now to open the simulation

5. Select the Photon Absorption tab and ensure that the

Infrared Photons option is selected for the ray gun

Debrief

Using the information in the folder provided to you, work with your partners to clarify whether or not the following statements on the DO

NOW are myth or fact. If myth, explain your reasoning to disprove the myth.

CO2 is the main greenhouse gas (GHG) that has led to recent increasing global temperatures

Global Warming is only partly human caused

CO2 produced by human activity alone causes global warming

Global Warming is all bad and is extremely harmful to our survival on Earth

CO2 is not a pollutant

The Earth’s Temperatures increase due to GHG ability to absorb ultraviolet radiation emitted from the sun

Ways to stop producing carbon dioxide:

Stop breathing - When you exhale you release carbon dioxide

Don't live in a house/apartment/condo or any building that uses gas or electricity -

Homes produce 2-3 times as much carbon as cars.

Don't wear shoes or any sort of clothing produced in a factory. Grow a cotton field and make your own clothes by hand.

Quit school - Those school buildings produce more carbon in a year then you do in 20 years.

Turn off this monitor and computer - You hypocrite.

Don't use toilets, urinate or poo in your back yard.- The water to your house is cleaned and sent to your house using pumps that use electricity.

Die - Dying younger means you will do all of the above less. Living one year less means you will save the earth 8.4 tons of carbon dioxide every year you're not here
