AP Biology Summer 2105 Assignment
Summer School AP Hours:
 Monday: Monday will be individual student work time. I am available to
answer questions during this time. I will lecture the first hour of class, the
remaining 3 hours will be work time.
 Tuesday will be the lab described below. Remaining time will be individual
student work time.
 Wednesday will be the lab described below. Remaining time will be
individual student work time.
 Thursday will be FRQ day. Remaining class time will be individual student
work time.
 Friday: I will lecture the first hour of class, the remaining time will be
individual student work time.
Assignments to Complete:
1. Take notes on chapter 2. Include diagrams. Pre-requisite Knowledge
2. Take notes on chapter 3. Include diagrams. Essential Knowledge 2.A.3
3. Take notes on Chapter 4 concept 1 and 2 Essential Knowledge 1.D.1, 2.A.3
4. Create a poster for chapter 4 concept 3 that shows the different functional
groups, an example of each functional group, an example of a molecule that
contains that functional group (with the functional group highlighted). This is
almost identical to the chart in your book for this section. You need to know
the functional groups, be able to recognize them, and recognize how they
interact with other functional groups. On the bottom of your poster explain
how functional groups in molecules can be re-arranged to create larger or
smaller molecules using either a hydrolysis or dehydration synthesis
reaction. Draw an example for each showing what happens (i.e. highlighting
the section that is added or removed etc). Pre-requisite Knowledge
5. Create a poster for chapter 5 that shows the 4 major macromolecules of life.
In your poster draw the monomer and polymer for each, label the name of
the monomer and polymer, and describe the characteristics of each type of
macromolecule. For proteins be sure to discuss the different conformational
levels. Essential Knowledge 4.A.1, 4.C.1, 3.A.1
6. For chapter 6 create a poster that includes a drawing of a plant cell, animal
cell, virus, and bacteria cell. For each cell label the cell parts. Include a chart
that describes the structure and function for each cell part. Essential
Knowledge 2.A.3, 2.B.3, 4.A.2, 4.B.2
7. In your notes notebook create a chart that shows the 3 domains of life. For
each domain describe characteristics of organisms in that domain. Provide an
example for each.
8. Life Survey Microscope Lab: Observe the provided specimens using the
microscope. For each specimen make a sketch of the structure. Label all
identifiable parts. List which domain the specimen belongs too. (this lab is
allowing you to visualize the domains you studied, as well as practice
microscope skills). Completed during Summer AP Hours. TUESDAY
9. Macromolecule Lab: You will complete the macromolecule lab during
Summer AP hours. WEDNESDAY Essential Knowledge 1.D.1, 2.A.3, 4.A.1,
4.C.1, 3.A.1
10. Complete the cell unit vocabulary crossword
11. Complete the 3 sample FRQ questions during summer school AP hours and
participate in peer review. THURSDAY
