SBAC Updates SBAC: Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (Smarter Balanced) is a state-led consortium working to develop next-generation assessments that accurately measure student progress toward college- and career-readiness. Smarter Balanced is one of two multistate consortia awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Education in 2010 to develop an assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) by the 2014-15 school year. CAASPP: California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress • • • • • 2014−15 CAASPP comprises the following required assessments: Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment (SBAC) – Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) and Performance Task (PT), for English−Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 Early Assessment Program (EAP) – Which will use the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments in grade 11 Alternate assessment field test for ELA and mathematics in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 (students with accommodations) Science assessments – California Standards Test (CST), California Modified Assessment (CMA), and California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA), in grades 5, 8, and 10 (Optional) Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS) for reading/language arts in grades 2 through 11 Paper and Pencil Tests: 2014−15 CAASPP paper and pencil assessments: •CST for science in grades 5, 8, and 10 •CMA for science in grades 5, 8, and 10 •CAPA for science in grades 5, 8, and 10 •STS for reading/language arts in grades 2 through 11 (optional) What types of questions will be on the SBAC? Preparing Our Students: Quarter 3 and a Summative SBAC Interim Comprehensive Assessment: Mirror the summative assessment Use the same blueprints. Assess the same range of standards. Have the same item types and formats. Include Performance tasks (PTs). Require the same administration time. Provide information regarding student readiness for the end-ofyear summative assessment Resources • The SBAC Digital Library • SBAC Training and Practice Tests The Digital Library Consists of tools and practices designed to help teachers utilize formative assessment processes for improved teaching and learning in all grades.
